New investment prospects have emerged for Maldivian businesses in Sri Lanka, following the successful conclusion of a three-day state visit by Sri Lankan President His Excellency Anura Kumara Dissanayake to the Maldives. The visit, described by both governments as a key milestone in strengthening bilateral relations, has paved the way for deeper economic engagement and increased opportunities for Maldivian entrepreneurs in the Sri Lankan market.
In an interview with PSM News’ “Raajje Miadhu” programme, High Commissioner of the Maldives to Sri Lanka, Masood Imad, revealed that the Sri Lankan government is ready to facilitate long-term land leases for Maldivian investors, an initiative aimed at encouraging direct investment and business expansion. “Sri Lanka is offering favourable conditions, including land lease options, to support Maldivian businesses,” he said. “This is a promising development, and the High Commission will continue supporting locals interested in operating ventures in Sri Lanka.”
Currently, only a limited number of Maldivian investments exist in Sri Lanka. However, President Dissanayake’s visit included participation in the Sri Lanka–Maldives Business Forum, where he presented the country’s potential in tourism, trade, healthcare, real estate, and ICT, inviting the Maldivian business community to consider Sri Lanka a reliable investment destination.
High Commissioner Masood further stated that 27 additional Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are under review, following the signing of two bilateral agreements during the visit. These upcoming agreements are expected to further streamline cross-border cooperation in various sectors including education, infrastructure, and trade.
He also noted that some Sri Lankan banks have shown interest in financing Maldivian investment ventures, and discussions are underway regarding potential Maldivian-operated healthcare facilities in Sri Lanka, an initiative that reflects growing mutual trust and a positive perception of the Maldives within the Sri Lankan business community.
The momentum from President Dissanayake’s visit follows closely on the heels of an official visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Maldives, where high-level discussions centered on strengthening economic cooperation between the Maldives and India. As part of that visit, a USD 565 million Line of Credit (LOC) was agreed upon, intended to support key sectors such as healthcare, education, and housing, according to Dr Ibrahim Zuhuree, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Dr Zuhuree also highlighted that a potential free trade agreement between the Maldives and India is under discussion, with both countries showing strong interest in bolstering bilateral trade and strategic partnerships.
Reflecting on both visits, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu described them as crucial steps in deepening cooperation with two of the Maldives’ closest neighbours. He emphasized that these diplomatic engagements reflect the administration’s foreign policy priority: enhancing regional integration, strengthening strategic partnerships, and creating favourable conditions for trade and investment.
For foreign visitors and global business audiences, the Maldives’ active diplomatic engagements with India and Sri Lanka present a compelling picture of a country committed to economic growth, regional collaboration, and investment facilitation, further enhancing its stature not just as a premier tourism destination, but as a growing hub for South Asian trade and commerce.
