A new chapter in sports development has been unlocked for the Maldives as China’s Fujian Province extends its support through a donation of sports equipment and a series of bilateral training initiatives. The collaboration, established under a formal partnership agreement between the two sides, marks a strategic effort to strengthen athletic performance, enhance coaching capabilities, and promote international exposure for Maldivian athletes.
Speaking to PSM News after the official handover ceremony, Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu highlighted that the swift delivery of sports apparel and equipment is a clear reflection of the strong diplomatic and cultural ties between the Maldives and Fujian Province. The equipment donation, he noted, is not an isolated gesture but the beginning of a larger, long-term sports collaboration framework.

The donated gear will be distributed across the country, supporting the government’s ongoing efforts to implement President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of nationwide sports development. This includes the targeted delivery of athletics equipment to islands where access to such resources has traditionally been limited.
Minister Rafiu emphasized that the partnership goes beyond logistics and material support. During high-level meetings with officials from Fujian Province, both parties agreed to launch additional training exchange programmes that will benefit both players and coaches. “We have discussed sending some of our teams to Fujian Province for intensive training and, in return, bringing coaches and athletes from Fujian to the Maldives for knowledge exchange and skill development,” he said.
One of the key highlights of the programme is the commitment from Fujian Province to deploy professional coaches to train 50 local basketball coaches in the Maldives. This initiative is expected to significantly raise the standards of basketball coaching and gameplay nationwide. Furthermore, the province will allocate four training slots for Maldivians to pursue specialized studies in sports medicine, a critical field that supports athlete health, injury prevention, and performance optimisation.
The National Institute of Sports will take the lead in coordinating and implementing these exchange programmes, ensuring the initiatives align with national priorities and development plans.
Minister Rafiu stated that these efforts are part of a broader objective to introduce Maldivian athletes and coaches to international standards, particularly in sports disciplines that enjoy widespread popularity and advanced infrastructure in Fujian Province. Youth development, coach certification, and cross-border technical cooperation are among the focus areas in the newly agreed framework.
“This meeting may have appeared to be about an equipment handover, but it served as a meaningful platform to explore deeper cooperation opportunities and expand the range of joint sports development initiatives,” Minister Rafiu explained.
The Maldives continues to look outward in its ambition to grow its sporting capabilities, and strategic partnerships like the one with Fujian Province serve as a vital catalyst for unlocking new pathways of growth — reinforcing the nation’s commitment to investing in the next generation of athletes and promoting international cooperation in the realm of sports and recreation.
