A distinguished delegation from Maldives’ Public Service Media (PSM) is currently taking part in the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Global News Forum, hosted in Istanbul, Turkey. This annual gathering brings together media professionals from around the world to exchange insights and address the evolving challenges faced by the broadcasting industry.

Representing PSM at the event are Deputy Managing Director Abdulla Yameen, Director of News Hussain Ameen, and Director of Marketing, Sales and Communication Ibrahim Rameez. Their participation underscores Maldives’ commitment to staying engaged in global media discourse and adapting to innovations shaping the future of journalism.

The theme of this year’s forum is “Journalism Under the Fire”, which draws attention to the increasing threats faced by journalists, particularly those reporting from conflict zones. ABU Secretary General Ahmed Nadeem emphasized that the theme reflects the bravery of reporters covering the humanitarian crisis in Palestine. He highlighted the deliberate targeting of media personnel amid ongoing violence, calling for global awareness of these attacks and recognition of the crucial role journalists play in documenting atrocities.

Running until May 23, the forum is being hosted by the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) and offers a platform for thought-provoking discussions and knowledge exchange on key issues in journalism today. In addition to addressing press freedom and safety, the event also explores the integration of cutting-edge technologies, including the application of artificial intelligence in news content production. Participants are gaining valuable exposure to the latest digital tools revolutionizing the media landscape.

Founded in 1964, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union is one of the largest broadcasting associations in the world. It currently has 232 members across 66 countries, including Maldives’ Public Service Media. The ABU serves as a vital platform for cooperation among broadcasters and works to elevate standards and innovation across the industry.

Through its participation, PSM not only strengthens ties with global media institutions but also contributes to vital conversations around journalistic integrity, safety, and innovation, values that are essential to the continued growth of responsible media in the Maldives and beyond.
