His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu arrived in Malaysia on Sunday, 27th April 2025, for an official visit at the invitation of His Excellency Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia. This marks President Dr Muizzu’s first official visit to Malaysia since assuming office, further cementing the Maldives’ commitment to fostering enduring friendships across Asia.
Upon his arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, President Dr Muizzu was warmly welcomed with an official ceremony. Leading the welcoming delegation was Malaysia’s Minister of Health, Dr Haji Dzulkefly Ahmad, designated as the Minister-in-Attendance for the visit. Also present were Chief of Protocol His Excellency Yubazlan bin Yusof, Chief of Ceremony of the Prime Minister’s Department His Excellency Rozainor bin Ramli, Malaysia’s High Commissioner to the Maldives His Excellency Badli Hisham Adam, and the Maldives’ High Commissioner to Malaysia Her Excellency Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed. In line with international diplomatic customs, the President was accorded an Honour Guard to mark the beginning of his official engagements.
Accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials, President Dr Muizzu’s visit underscores the longstanding close relationship between the Maldives and Malaysia. Both nations share deep-rooted ties that span areas such as trade, education, tourism, and cultural cooperation. Malaysia has consistently been one of the preferred destinations for Maldivian students pursuing higher education, as well as for business and healthcare services, reflecting the multi-dimensional nature of the relationship.
A key focus of President Dr Muizzu’s visit is to enhance cooperation in areas that impact the Maldivian community residing in Malaysia. With a substantial number of Maldivians living in Malaysia for education, business, and professional opportunities, the visit aims to explore ways to streamline essential services, strengthen support networks, and address the specific concerns of the diaspora. These engagements reaffirm the administration’s focus on ensuring the well-being of Maldivians abroad and maintaining strong connections with expatriate communities.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Malaysia is scheduled to conclude on April 30, 2025. His first official visit to the country represents a meaningful step towards expanding the Maldives’ international partnerships and promoting the Maldives as a thriving, forward-looking destination for investment, education, and tourism.
