To spotlight the natural beauty and ecological significance of the Maldives, Baa Atoll is preparing to host an extraordinary mass diving event with the goal of making it into the Guinness World Records. Organized jointly by the Baa Atoll Council and Freedive Maldives, this large-scale event, titled “Baani”, is scheduled for 3rd October 2025 in the vibrant marine area of Angafaru.
Timed in conjunction with the World Tourism Day celebrations, the event will feature approximately 1,000 divers from across the Maldives, including locals, resort guests, and diving professionals, descending into the waters at the same time. If successful, this synchronized dive would become the largest of its kind in the Maldives and potentially secure global recognition in the Guinness World Records.
The initiative goes beyond the pursuit of a world record. It reflects a broader vision to promote Baa Atoll as a premier travel destination while advocating for marine conservation and sustainable tourism. With its unique position as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Baa Atoll is home to an incredible array of biodiversity, including coral reefs, manta rays, and whale sharks. The location of the event, Angafaru, is part of the core protected area of the Biosphere Reserve, renowned for its pristine underwater landscapes.
The Baa Atoll Council has announced its plans to partner with the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office to ensure that the event highlights both the thrill of diving and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. The collaboration aims to inspire visitors and residents alike to engage more actively in environmental stewardship while experiencing the rich natural offerings of the atoll.
With global attention increasingly drawn to eco-conscious travel, this ambitious diving initiative positions Baa Atoll and the Maldives as leaders in responsible tourism. As excitement builds toward the October event, Baani is expected to not only attract international divers and media but also reinforce the Maldives’ reputation as one of the world’s most breathtaking diving destinations.
