The Maldives has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening economic and commercial relations with Pakistan, with both countries setting an ambitious target to increase bilateral trade from the current USD 13 million to USD 200 million within the next two years.
Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed highlighted the shared economic aspirations of the Maldives and Pakistan while addressing the opening ceremony of the Maldives-Pakistan Business Forum in Islamabad. The forum brought together business leaders, investors and representatives from both countries to explore new opportunities for trade, investment and long-term commercial cooperation.
During his address, Minister Saeed expressed appreciation to the Government of Pakistan for the warm hospitality extended to the Maldivian delegation. He said the continued engagement between the leadership of the two countries demonstrated a strong mutual interest in building a more substantial, sustainable and productive economic relationship.
A central focus of the growing partnership is the significant expansion of bilateral trade. Minister Saeed noted that the current trade volume of approximately USD 13 million offers considerable room for growth, particularly given the complementary strengths and commercial potential of the two economies. He reaffirmed the Maldives’ readiness to work closely with Pakistan to achieve the USD 200 million trade target within two years.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of creating direct links between businesses in both countries, noting that stronger private-sector engagement would be essential to translating government-level cooperation into tangible economic activity. He encouraged participating companies to use the business forum to establish new partnerships, identify commercial opportunities and explore areas where Maldivian and Pakistani businesses could work together for mutual benefit.
The Maldives continues to position itself as an increasingly attractive destination for international investment, supported by the Government’s emphasis on economic diversification, infrastructure development and private-sector participation. The country’s established tourism industry remains one of its most prominent economic strengths, while opportunities are also expanding in areas including real estate development, construction, logistics, fisheries, renewable energy, digital services and other emerging sectors.
The Maldivian tourism sector, in particular, continues to offer significant opportunities for international investors and business partners. Renowned globally for its premium island resorts, white sandy beaches, clear lagoons and high-end hospitality services, the Maldives has built one of the world’s most distinctive tourism industries. Resort development has played a major role in attracting foreign investment, generating employment and supporting the growth of related industries such as construction, transport, food supply, technology and professional services.
With tourism development continuing across established and emerging destinations, investors are being presented with opportunities connected to new resorts, integrated tourism developments, hospitality infrastructure and supporting services. The Government’s broader development agenda also seeks to encourage investment beyond traditional tourism centres, opening additional opportunities across the atolls and strengthening economic activity throughout the country.
Minister Saeed explained that the presentations and discussions held during the Maldives-Pakistan Business Forum would provide participants with greater insight into the Maldives’ investment environment, priority economic sectors and major development opportunities. The forum is designed to help businesses better understand the country’s commercial landscape while allowing Maldivian companies to identify potential partners and markets in Pakistan.
He encouraged representatives from both countries to actively participate in the forum’s discussions and use the platform to develop practical business relationships. Strengthening connectivity between companies, investors and entrepreneurs is expected to support the wider objective of significantly increasing trade and creating a more diversified economic partnership between the two nations.
The Maldives-Pakistan Business Forum forms part of a broader initiative under which business forums are organised in countries visited by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his official overseas engagements. The initiative reflects the Government’s emphasis on using high-level international visits to generate practical economic opportunities for the Maldives and strengthen direct engagement between the Maldivian private sector and international business communities.
Through these forums, Maldivian businesses are able to engage directly with potential investors, trading partners and companies overseas, while foreign participants are introduced to major projects, investment prospects and emerging sectors in the Maldives. The approach is aimed at ensuring that diplomatic engagements are accompanied by stronger commercial cooperation and measurable opportunities for economic development.
The Islamabad forum continues this effort by bringing together Maldivian and Pakistani business representatives at a time when both countries are seeking to substantially expand their economic relationship. The proposed increase in bilateral trade to USD 200 million represents a significant objective and reflects the confidence of both sides in the potential for stronger commercial ties.
With greater business-to-business engagement, increased investment promotion and continued cooperation between the two governments, the Maldives and Pakistan are seeking to build a broader economic partnership capable of supporting trade, investment and new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
