The Maldives is seeking to extend its record as one of the world’s most celebrated tourism destinations after being nominated once again for the prestigious World’s Leading Destination title at the World Travel Awards 2026, with global voting open until 30 October.

The nomination follows six consecutive victories for the Maldives in the World’s Leading Destination category from 2020 to 2025, reflecting the country’s sustained international recognition for its exceptional natural environment, distinctive hospitality and continuously evolving tourism industry. The achievement has further strengthened the Maldives’ position as one of the most recognisable luxury and experiential travel destinations in the global market.

Few destinations offer the visual experience of arriving in the Maldives, where hundreds of tropical islands, coral reefs and lagoons are scattered across the Indian Ocean. The country’s clear waters, white sandy beaches and island landscapes have become internationally recognised symbols of Maldivian tourism, while continued investment across the sector has expanded the range of experiences available to travellers.

The Maldivian resort industry remains central to this appeal. Resorts across the archipelago range from intimate private-island retreats to larger integrated properties offering extensive accommodation, recreation, dining and leisure facilities. Beach villas, overwater residences and private pool villas allow visitors to experience the country’s natural surroundings from different perspectives, while many properties have developed highly personalised services designed around privacy, comfort and individual guest preferences.

The resort experience also extends well beyond accommodation. Guests can explore coral reefs through diving and snorkelling, encounter marine life including turtles and tropical fish, enjoy water sports, visit sandbanks and experience excursions across the surrounding atolls. Private dining, island experiences and carefully designed recreational programmes further allow resorts to provide different styles of holidays for couples, families, groups and travellers seeking exclusive escapes.

Families are increasingly well served by the destination, with resorts offering activities suitable for different age groups and lagoon-based experiences that allow families to enjoy the natural environment together. Couples continue to choose the Maldives for private island stays and romantic escapes, while luxury travellers benefit from personalised services, spacious villas and secluded surroundings.

Maldivian tourism has also diversified to accommodate corporate gatherings, business events and private functions in distinctive island settings. Resorts increasingly provide meeting facilities and customised event arrangements, combining professional services with the privacy and scenery associated with the Maldives.

Beyond resort islands, travellers also have opportunities to experience Maldivian communities, local cuisine, traditional craftsmanship and the wider culture of an island nation shaped by generations of life around the sea. The interaction between established resort tourism, local island tourism and other hospitality segments has broadened the country’s appeal while creating additional opportunities for visitors to experience different aspects of Maldivian life.

Marine conservation remains closely connected to the future of the tourism industry. Coral reefs, lagoons and the surrounding ocean form the foundation of the Maldivian visitor experience, making environmental protection increasingly important to tourism development. Resorts, tourism businesses, communities and government institutions continue to place greater emphasis on protecting marine ecosystems and maintaining the natural assets that support the country’s international tourism reputation.

Accessibility has also continued to strengthen as the Government expands aviation and transport infrastructure supporting the tourism sector. International air connectivity, improvements to airport facilities and a nationwide network of domestic flights, seaplanes and speedboat transfers help connect visitors with resorts and inhabited islands across the archipelago. The Maldives’ visitor-friendly entry arrangements also contribute to making the destination accessible to travellers from major international markets.

The Government has continued to prioritise tourism as a key pillar of national development, alongside efforts to strengthen aviation connectivity, destination promotion and tourism infrastructure. These developments support the industry’s ability to reach new markets while reinforcing the Maldives’ reputation for high-quality hospitality and distinctive island experiences.

At the centre of the destination’s success is Maldivian hospitality. From resort teams welcoming guests to communities sharing traditions and island culture, the people behind the tourism industry remain an important part of the visitor experience. This combination of natural beauty, professional hospitality and the distinctive character of island life has helped generations of travellers form lasting connections with the Maldives.

The Maldives is now calling on travellers, tourism professionals, industry partners and supporters around the world to vote for the country in the World’s Leading Destination category at the World Travel Awards 2026. Voting closes on 30 October 2026.
