ananea Madivaru Maldives has strengthened its focus on authentic Maldivian cultural experiences with the opening of Island Stories, a special art exhibition by renowned Maldivian multidisciplinary artist and curator Umair Badheeu, celebrating the people, landscapes and everyday moments that define island life across the Maldives.
The exhibition opened on Monday, 31 August 2026, at the resort’s Art Studio in North Ari Atoll, bringing together a carefully selected collection of works that capture familiar scenes from Maldivian communities. Through his artistic interpretation, Umair presents the distinctive character of island life, drawing attention to local harbours, fishing beaches, people and everyday environments that form an important part of the country’s cultural identity.
Located amid the natural surroundings of North Ari Atoll, ananea Madivaru Maldives is expanding the traditional resort experience by creating meaningful opportunities for international visitors to discover the Maldives beyond its globally recognised beaches and marine environment. Through cultural initiatives such as Island Stories, the resort is offering guests an opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation of the country’s communities, traditions and creative heritage while providing Maldivian artists with an international platform to present their work.
The initiative reflects ananea Madivaru Maldives’ commitment to incorporating Maldivian creativity and storytelling into the guest experience. Based in Malé, Umair Badheeu has worked across fine art, documentary photography, exhibitions and cultural preservation for nearly 25 years. His extensive experience documenting Maldivian communities has provided him with a close understanding of the environments, traditions and everyday activities that shape life throughout the archipelago.
After many years focused on documentary observation, Umair has returned to his artistic roots in watercolour painting. His recent work turns attention towards scenes that may appear ordinary to local communities but carry significant cultural meaning, transforming familiar views of harbours, fishing beaches and island surroundings into visual narratives of contemporary Maldivian life.
Beyond his personal artistic practice, Umair has made notable contributions to the preservation and presentation of Maldivian heritage. His curatorial work includes establishing the Dutch Onion Museum at Cora Cora Maldives, as well as leading the reconstruction of an ancient Maldivian home and contributing to the conservation of bathing tanks estimated to be approximately 900 years old. His work therefore extends beyond artistic interpretation to the documentation and preservation of physical and cultural elements connected to the Maldives’ historical identity.
The opening event at ananea Madivaru Maldives was scheduled from 17:00 to 18:00 at the resort’s Art Studio and included an introduction by Umair, followed by a guided journey through selected works. Guests were provided with an opportunity to explore the exhibition, engage with the stories represented through the artworks and learn more directly from the artist about his creative approach and observations of Maldivian island life.
Guests were also invited to enjoy canapés and refreshments during the event, while selected artworks and merchandise were made available for purchase and signing, allowing visitors to take home a tangible connection to Maldivian art and culture.
