The Maldives on Saturday welcomed its one millionth tourist of 2026, reaching an important milestone for the country’s tourism industry and reaffirming its enduring appeal as one of the world’s most sought-after island destinations. The milestone visitor, Almudena Esparza of Spain, arrived at Velana International Airport on a Qatar Airways flight, where a special ceremony was held to mark the occasion in the presence of Tourism Minister Mohamed Ameen, Managing Director of Visit Maldives Ibrahim Shiuree, and senior officials of Maldives Airports Company Limited.
The achievement highlights the continued international interest in the Maldives, a destination widely admired for its exceptional natural beauty, world-class hospitality, and premium travel experiences. Renowned for its turquoise lagoons, white sandy beaches, luxurious resorts, and personalised services, the Maldives remains a preferred choice for travellers seeking comfort, privacy, and memorable holiday experiences in the Indian Ocean. The country’s tourism product continues to attract a diverse range of visitors from around the world, including leisure travellers, honeymooners, families, and those in search of exclusive island getaways.
The resort sector continues to play a central role in sustaining the Maldives’ global tourism reputation. Resorts across the country offer an exceptional standard of accommodation and service, combining scenic island environments with high-end amenities, refined culinary experiences, wellness offerings, marine excursions, and tailored guest services. From iconic overwater villas to family-friendly beachfront retreats, Maldivian resorts continue to distinguish themselves through quality, innovation, and a strong emphasis on guest satisfaction. This sustained excellence has enabled the country to maintain its profile in an increasingly competitive international tourism market.
The one million visitor mark was reached later this year than in 2025, when the same milestone was achieved during the first week of June. Available figures indicate that arrivals have been affected by recent developments in the Middle East, with tourist arrivals currently down by around five per cent compared with the corresponding period last year. Nevertheless, the Maldives continues to receive approximately 5,000 visitors per day on average, demonstrating the resilience of the sector and the continued confidence of international travellers in the destination.
The Government has set a target of attracting 2.5 million tourists by the end of 2026, reflecting its broader ambition to further strengthen the country’s tourism industry and support national economic growth. While industry observers have noted that ongoing disruptions to international travel and aviation linked to the conflict in the Middle East may influence the pace of arrivals during the remainder of the year, the latest milestone remains a positive indicator of the Maldives’ strong global brand and the industry’s ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
Tourism remains the Maldives’ largest source of foreign currency earnings and one of the most important contributors to economic activity across the country. The industry supports a wide network of businesses and livelihoods, including resorts, guesthouses, transport providers, suppliers, and service operators, while continuing to generate employment and investment opportunities nationwide. As the Maldives celebrates this significant milestone, the achievement stands as a reflection of the country’s international appeal, the strength of its tourism infrastructure, and the continued dedication of all those working to deliver a world-class visitor experience.
