The Maldives is set to introduce a revised and more convenient process for extending tourist visas from next month, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance visitor services and support the country’s position as a premier global travel destination. Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Thoriq announced the development on Sunday during a press conference held at the President’s Office, stating that Maldives Immigration is preparing to launch a simplified tourist visa extension system beginning April 1.
According to the minister, the current visa extension procedure requires applicants to submit multiple documents together with the application form, which can make the process time-consuming for visitors. Under the new arrangement, tourists will be able to apply for visa extensions through an online platform by submitting a photo of their visa and making the required payment. The simplified digital process is expected to make the service more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly for tourists already in the country.
Minister Thoriq said Maldives Immigration has informed the government that applications submitted through the new system will be processed within 48 hours. This is expected to provide added convenience for international travellers who may need to remain in the Maldives beyond their initial stay period, while also improving the overall visitor experience through faster administrative service delivery.
He explained that the updated process is intended to facilitate visa extensions for tourists currently in the Maldives, particularly in situations where travel plans may be affected by unforeseen circumstances. The minister referred to recent instances in which some visitors were unable to depart before their visas expired due to disruptions linked to the situation in the Middle East. In such cases, Maldives Immigration had previously facilitated visa extensions, reflecting the country’s practical and responsive approach to supporting travellers facing unexpected difficulties.
Tourists arriving in the Maldives are granted a 30-day visa on arrival and may apply for an extension through the Immigration system if they wish to continue their stay. The new online visa extension platform is expected to further strengthen the Maldives’ tourism environment by making travel procedures smoother and more adaptable to the needs of international guests.
The upcoming change also aligns with broader efforts to maintain the Maldives’ reputation as a welcoming and service-oriented destination for global travellers. As one of the world’s most sought-after island destinations, the Maldives continues to place importance not only on its natural beauty, luxury hospitality, and exceptional resort experiences, but also on the quality and efficiency of services that support visitor comfort from arrival to departure. The introduction of a faster and more streamlined visa extension process is likely to be welcomed by tourists seeking greater flexibility while enjoying the country’s renowned resorts, private islands, and distinctive travel experiences.
With the tourism sector remaining central to the Maldivian economy, improvements of this nature reflect the government’s continued focus on strengthening visitor confidence and ensuring that travel to the Maldives remains convenient, secure, and well-supported. The planned launch of the new system from April 1 marks another positive step in enhancing the overall travel experience for those choosing the Maldives as their destination.
