The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is preparing to resume construction of Alifushi Airport in Raa Atoll following an extended pause in development, with work expected to recommence after the holy month of Ramadan. The project, which began in 2022, experienced interruptions that delayed its completion, yet visible progress on key structures reflects the continuing commitment to delivering critical infrastructure for the island. The airport remains a significant development priority for the approximately 3,000 residents of Alifushi, who view the facility as an important step toward improved connectivity and expanded economic opportunities.
Despite the temporary halt in construction activities, major components of the airport have already taken shape. The main terminal building has reached partial completion, while the fire and rescue building is nearing its final stages. According to MTCC officials, finishing materials required for the primary structures have already been secured and stored on-site, allowing construction activities to resume without delay once work recommences. This preparation positions the project for a steady continuation toward completion.
The airport development has been made possible through a large-scale land reclamation programme designed to support both aviation infrastructure and broader municipal expansion. A total of 50.5 hectares of land has been reclaimed to accommodate the project. Under the master plan, 80 percent of this reclaimed area is designated for airport operations, ensuring adequate space for aviation facilities and related infrastructure. The remaining land includes allocations for residential development and commercial activities, with 10 percent of the reclaimed area set aside to support housing and economic enterprises that will complement the airport’s operations. To protect the newly reclaimed landmass, a coastal revetment extending 2,871 metres has been constructed, providing structural protection and long-term stability.
Once completed, the airport will feature a 1,200-metre runway designed to support domestic aviation operations, alongside a fully equipped apron and taxiway that will facilitate safe and efficient aircraft movement. Supporting infrastructure will include road networks that connect airport facilities to the island’s broader transportation system. The development also incorporates essential operational facilities such as a terminal building to accommodate passengers and services, as well as a specialised fire station equipped with comprehensive firefighting capabilities to meet aviation safety standards. Security measures will include a 655-metre perimeter fence designed to ensure safe airport operations.
The project is financed entirely through the national budget and represents a total investment of USD 27.64 million. Beyond its role as an aviation facility, the airport is expected to serve as a catalyst for broader economic development within Alifushi and the surrounding region. Improved air connectivity will facilitate easier movement of residents and visitors, support local businesses, and enhance the island’s integration with national transportation networks.
The wider development vision for Alifushi extends beyond the airport itself. During a visit to the island in 2024, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu outlined plans to establish an industrial zone in conjunction with the airport development. The proposed industrial area is intended to create employment opportunities and enable residents to pursue livelihoods without the need to relocate from the island. Additional development plans announced during the visit include the establishment of a hospital equipped with modern medical facilities, the development of a sports complex to promote community well-being, the creation of a waste management facility to strengthen environmental sustainability, and the expansion of banking services to support economic activity.
These combined initiatives highlight a broader strategy aimed at strengthening infrastructure, enhancing public services, and creating a more dynamic economic environment in Raa Atoll. The completion of Alifushi Airport is expected to play a central role in advancing these objectives, contributing to improved connectivity, supporting local industries, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents while opening new opportunities for development across the region.
