SME Digital has introduced two Shari’ah-compliant financing products aimed at supporting the continued growth and resilience of the Maldives’ local tourism industry, offering new opportunities for entrepreneurs and established operators to develop and enhance tourism ventures across the country’s islands. The financing facilities, titled “Guesthouse Financing” and “Guestroom Financing,” are designed to ease access to capital while encouraging sustainable business development aligned with Islamic financial principles, reflecting the evolving needs of community-based tourism in the Maldives.

The initiatives are expected to contribute to the expansion and modernisation of island tourism by enabling operators to invest in infrastructure, improve service standards, and adopt modern technologies that enhance visitor experiences. As global travel demand increasingly shifts toward authentic and community-oriented destinations, locally operated guesthouses and homestays have become an essential component of the Maldivian tourism landscape. By addressing financial barriers that often limit small and medium-sized enterprises, SME Digital’s financing solutions aim to encourage wider participation in tourism while supporting balanced economic development throughout the atolls.

Chief Executive Officer Badhurudheen Hassan stated that the financing programmes are structured to promote sustainable economic growth by empowering local entrepreneurs and strengthening island economies. Through the provision of capital for construction projects on council-leased land, the facilities are intended to expand business opportunities for residents, create employment, and diversify income sources within local communities. The approach aligns with national efforts to ensure tourism benefits are distributed more broadly across the country, supporting inclusive growth beyond traditional resort destinations.

The Guesthouse Financing facility is tailored for tourism operations with a minimum of six rooms, supporting both new developments and the expansion or upgrading of existing properties. Financing under this scheme is capped at USD 648,508.43 and requires a 20 percent equity contribution from applicants, encouraging responsible investment while maintaining accessibility for entrepreneurs. Borrowers benefit from a repayment tenure of up to 15 years, including an 18-month grace period, allowing sufficient time for construction, operational setup, and revenue stabilisation. The facility is expected to assist operators in enhancing accommodation standards, integrating digital management systems, and improving sustainability practices that meet the expectations of international travellers.

Complementing this initiative, the Guestroom Financing option focuses on smaller-scale tourism businesses, including homestays and family-run accommodations with up to five rooms. With financing capped at USD 97,276.26, the programme provides accessible funding for individuals seeking to enter the tourism sector or upgrade existing guestroom facilities. The financing structure includes a 10-year repayment period and a 12-month grace period, offering flexibility during the early stages of operation. Eligibility is assessed based on repayment capacity, taking into account income sources such as salary, rental earnings, or business revenue, enabling a wider range of applicants to participate.

The introduction of these financing options reflects the growing importance of locally owned tourism enterprises in shaping the Maldives’ visitor experience. Guesthouses and small-scale accommodations allow travellers to engage closely with island communities, culture, and natural surroundings, while also supporting local supply chains and entrepreneurship. By facilitating investment in quality accommodations and operational improvements, SME Digital’s initiatives are expected to enhance competitiveness, encourage innovation, and contribute positively to the long-term sustainability of the Maldivian tourism sector for both local stakeholders and global visitors.
