Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) has announced the introduction of a dedicated national awards programme aimed at recognising excellence and innovation across the Maldives’ rapidly growing guesthouse sector, reinforcing the bank’s commitment to supporting community-based tourism and sustainable economic development. The initiative will celebrate businesses and individuals who are raising service standards, strengthening authentic Maldivian hospitality, and contributing meaningfully to the country’s diversified tourism landscape, which continues to attract global travellers seeking unique, immersive experiences beyond traditional resort offerings.

The awards will be presented during the inaugural MIB Guesthouse Symposium scheduled for October, an event that will bring together guesthouse operators, industry professionals, and key stakeholders to share insights, explore emerging trends, and highlight best practices within the sector. Through this platform, MIB aims to encourage innovation, operational excellence, and responsible tourism practices that enhance the overall reputation of Maldivian guesthouses in international markets, while also empowering island communities that depend on tourism as a primary source of livelihood.

The awards programme is structured around three main categories. The Guesthouse Awards will comprise eight distinct accolades, including the Service Excellence and Hospitality Award, Authentic Maldivian Experience Award, and Eco-Friendly Award, among others, designed to recognise properties that demonstrate outstanding performance, creativity, and commitment to quality. In addition, three Individual Awards will honour professionals who exemplify leadership and dedication, such as the Guest Experience Champion Award and Outstanding Dive Leader Award, acknowledging the pivotal role of skilled individuals in delivering memorable and safe experiences for visitors. A dedicated Island Award will also be presented to recognise an island community that has made a significant contribution to the development and growth of the guesthouse sector, highlighting the collective effort behind successful community tourism.

To ensure transparency and credibility, MIB has appointed Crowe Maldives, a well-established audit and advisory firm, to administer the awards. Under this arrangement, Crowe Maldives will manage the nomination process, oversee evaluations, and facilitate the selection of winners in accordance with clearly defined criteria. Speaking at the launch ceremony, Hassan Mohamed, Managing Partner of Crowe Maldives, praised MIB’s initiative, noting that the awards are expected to encourage higher industry standards and further promote sustainable tourism practices across the Maldives.

Applications for the awards will open on 15 July, with submissions accepted until 20 August. Eligible guesthouses, individuals, and island communities are invited to apply through MIB’s online portal, with detailed eligibility requirements and assessment criteria available on the bank’s website. By recognising excellence at multiple levels, MIB’s awards programme is set to strengthen the global profile of Maldivian guesthouses, showcase the richness of local hospitality, and support the continued evolution of a sector that plays an increasingly important role in the nation’s tourism success.
