Manta Air, the fastest-growing airline in the Maldives, has reached a significant milestone in its technical and operational development after receiving approval for its Maintenance Organisation for the D1 Rating from the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority (MCAA). The certification authorises Manta Air to carry out specialised Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) services on aircraft structures and components, placing the airline among a limited group of operators in the country equipped with this high-level capability and reinforcing the Maldives’ growing aviation engineering ecosystem.

NDT is an essential safety discipline in modern aviation, widely used to identify hidden cracks, corrosion and internal structural defects without causing damage to the inspected component. With the D1 rating, Manta Air’s NDT Workshop has been officially designated as a provider of Specialised Services, allowing the airline to support its own fleet with greater autonomy while also offering certified NDT inspection services to other airlines and aviation organisations operating in the Maldives. The expanded capability is expected to support wider industry reliability by increasing access to specialised inspections locally and enabling more efficient maintenance planning across operators.

Under the newly granted D1 rating, Manta Air is approved to conduct three advanced NDT methods: Liquid Penetrant Inspection (PT), Eddy Current Testing (ET) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT). Together, these methods enable precise detection of surface, sub-surface and deep internal defects across both metallic and composite aircraft structures—an important advantage in maintaining aircraft integrity, strengthening preventive maintenance programs, and ensuring long-term safety and performance in a demanding island aviation environment.

The airline’s dedicated NDT workshop is located at its MRO facility in Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, featuring a temperature-controlled and well-ventilated environment supported by engineered lighting and specialised probe systems designed to ensure inspection accuracy and repeatability. By establishing these controlled technical conditions, Manta Air aims to deliver consistent inspection outcomes that meet strict regulatory requirements while supporting quicker decision-making during critical maintenance checks.

Commenting on the achievement, Manta Air’s Head of Engineering Pablo Alves said the D1 approval represents a strategic leap forward for the Engineering Division, highlighting the operational benefits of bringing specialised NDT services in-house. He noted that the new capability will increase independence, reduce outsourcing costs and improve turnaround times for key inspections, while also complementing recent expansions across structural repairs, livery painting, EMMA checks, CPCP execution and the airline’s expanded battery workshops. Alves added that, collectively, these developments strengthen Manta Air’s ability to ensure fleet safety, reliability and long-term operational excellence, supporting consistent service delivery for passengers and partners across the Maldives.

Manta Air said achieving the D1 rating unlocks substantial value for both the company and the broader aviation sector by creating new opportunities to provide certified NDT services to other operators, reducing reliance on third-party approvals for structural inspections, lowering costs linked to external MRO providers, and shortening aircraft downtime through faster scheduling and immediate access to specialised inspections. These gains are expected to enhance operational continuity—an important factor in a country where aviation plays a central role in connectivity between islands and resorts, and where schedule reliability directly supports travel experiences and the visitor economy.

The certification also aligns with Manta Air’s multi-year strategy to strengthen engineering infrastructure, with recent enhancements including upgraded structural workshops, improved livery and paint capabilities, optimised EMMA inspection workflows, reinforced CPCP programs, and improved SAFT Ni-Cad and Lead-Acid battery servicing facilities. The airline emphasised that these investments are designed to raise service standards and deepen technical expertise within the Maldives, while improving efficiency and consistency across maintenance operations.

Deputy CEO of Manta Air, Ahmed Maumoon, described the D1 certification as an important chapter in the airline’s journey of continuous growth and capability expansion. He stated that as the fastest-growing domestic and seaplane operator in the Maldives, Manta Air remains committed to investing in world-class engineering facilities and technical expertise at its MRO in Dhaalu Airport. Maumoon added that the D1 approval not only enhances service quality for the airline’s own operations, but also positions Manta Air to support resort partners, industry stakeholders and fellow operators across the country, while continuing to elevate standards, broaden technical offerings and build an engineering ecosystem that reflects the company’s vision for excellence and national pride.

With the D1 rating now achieved, Manta Air will continue expanding its technical expertise and service offerings, further positioning the airline as a leading aviation engineering provider in the Maldives. The airline has also indicated that additional capability enhancements are planned for 2026, aligned with its long-term vision of delivering world-class, reliable and efficient maintenance services for its fleet and industry partners, while supporting stronger safety standards and operational performance across the wider aviation sector.
