Velana International Airport’s Terminal 1 is now serving 36 airlines, following the addition of Air France as the latest carrier to operate from the new terminal, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). The transition underscores the growing role of Terminal 1 as the primary international hub for travellers heading to the Maldives’ world-renowned resort destinations, enhancing connectivity and elevating the overall travel experience for holidaymakers from Europe and beyond.
To mark Air France’s shift to Terminal 1, a special ceremony was held at Velana International Airport. During the event, the airline’s dedicated check-in counters were formally inaugurated, reflecting MACL’s focus on providing a seamless and premium ground experience for passengers. Departing Air France guests were presented with gifts as a gesture of welcome and appreciation, while arriving passengers on the first flight to use Terminal 1 were greeted with Maldivian cultural performances, offering an immediate taste of the country’s rich heritage before they continue on to their resort islands.
Air France is the first French airline to commence operations from Terminal 1. The carrier has maintained a presence in the Maldives since November 2017, serving as an important bridge between France, wider Europe and the Maldives’ luxury resort market. Its relocation to Terminal 1 further strengthens the route network feeding into Maldivian resorts, making it easier for guests to connect from major European cities and arrive to the destination with shorter transit times, clearer wayfinding and improved airport services. For resort operators, the enhanced connectivity supports more predictable guest flows, better alignment of check-in and check-out schedules, and stronger access to high-value markets seeking premium beach and wellness experiences.
MACL has confirmed that efforts are underway to shift all airlines to Terminal 1 by the end of the year, consolidating international operations under one modern terminal to better serve the growing number of visitors to Maldivian resorts. The airport operator also announced that Emirates and Qatar Airways, two of the key global carriers funnelling guests to resorts across the archipelago, are scheduled to begin their services from Terminal 1 by the end of this week. This development is expected to further boost the efficiency of international arrivals and departures, supporting smoother transfers to resort speedboats and seaplanes and enhancing the first and last impressions of the Maldives for travellers.
The continued transition of airlines to Terminal 1 forms part of broader efforts to streamline operations and expand passenger handling capacity at the country’s main international gateway. For the resort sector, these upgrades translate into more reliable connections, reduced congestion during peak travel periods and a more comfortable journey for guests. As Terminal 1 becomes fully operational with a comprehensive airline portfolio, Maldivian resorts stand to benefit from stronger year-round access to key tourism markets, supporting ongoing investment, job creation and the long-term growth of the Maldives as a leading luxury destination on the global stage.
