A full-day high-level symposium titled The Futureshapers’ Workshop concluded with remarkable success at Meerumaa Hall in Malé, marking a pivotal moment for the Maldives tourism sector. Organised by Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), this business-to-business gathering brought together policymakers, leading industry figures, and media professionals for collaborative sessions focused on sustaining the Maldives’ status as one of the world’s most sought-after travel destinations.

Held as a follow-up to last year’s inaugural edition, this year’s event drew a wider and more diverse set of stakeholders, underlining the sector’s commitment to continuous learning, strategic foresight, and collective innovation. Throughout the day, attendees engaged in discussions addressing current travel trends, visitor behaviour, and marketing strategies, with a central objective of aligning public and private sector efforts under a shared vision for 2026.

The event opened with an address by VMC’s CEO and Managing Director, Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree, who reviewed the tourism industry’s performance in 2025 and laid the groundwork for the forward-facing agenda. He emphasized the value of cooperation, stating, “This symposium has reaffirmed that the strength of Maldives tourism lies in the unity of its stakeholders.” Mr. Shiuree also announced that the insights shared during the day would directly shape the upcoming Ocean Nation strategy, ensuring sustainability and authenticity remain at the heart of Maldives’ tourism identity.

The Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim, delivered keynote remarks, acknowledging the transformation of the sector and the increasing diversity in experiences offered to travellers. He highlighted that the Maldives is no longer only about luxury resorts and overwater villas, but also includes guesthouse tourism, liveaboard cruises, and atoll-based experiences that meet the evolving expectations of global travellers. “Our challenge now is to communicate these experiences effectively,” he said, reinforcing the importance of tailored and dynamic destination marketing.

The workshop’s agenda featured several prominent sessions. Sarah Mathews, CEO of e-Tourism Frontiers, led the Ocean Insights session where she explored the psychology of modern travellers, offering data-driven personas and trend forecasts. A highlight of the event was the presentation of VMC’s Destination Marketing Plan 2026, where the Ocean Nation strategy was introduced as the central campaign theme for the coming year.

Panel discussions covered emerging sub-sectors such as luxury and superyacht tourism, the growing demand for boating and marine experiences, and the rapid development of guesthouse and atoll-based travel. A working lunch provided region-specific updates from Maldives’ key source markets including India, China, Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Middle East, the United States, and France, offering participants valuable insights into shifting market dynamics and opportunities for expansion.

One of the key features of the symposium was the series of facilitated roundtable discussions. Attendees were divided into working groups to explore themes of innovation, product diversification, and regional development. These discussions were geared towards encouraging actionable collaboration among industry players, particularly as the Maldives prepares to implement strategic marketing and infrastructure development plans in 2026.

The closing statement by VMC Chairperson Mr. Abdulla Ghiyas Riyaz emphasized the importance of viewing tourism promotion not as a cost, but as a forward-looking investment. “Our competitors outspend us daily. We work smarter, but we also face limits. To remain the world’s ultimate luxury destination, we must invest more, boldly, strategically, and sustainably,” he urged, calling for both private sector and legislative support to amplify Maldives’ brand presence globally.

Following the event, VMC will compile a comprehensive post-symposium report including key insights, survey results, and strategic recommendations. This report, scheduled for release by mid-October 2025, will serve as a foundational document for stakeholders and guide the national tourism agenda throughout 2026.

The Futureshapers’ Workshop stands as a testament to Maldives’ dedication to shaping the future of its tourism industry through collaboration, market intelligence, and a shared commitment to preserving the unique appeal of the island nation for generations of travellers to come.
