A new chapter in destination promotion is about to unfold as Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) introduces the Visit Maldives Book of Records (BOR) on 4 October 2025, coinciding with the country’s National Tourism Day celebrations. The project is designed not only to highlight the Maldives as one of the world’s most iconic holiday destinations, but also to position it as an arena where remarkable achievements in sports tourism and adventure can take place.
The BOR will serve as a dynamic platform to document extraordinary feats, encouraging both Maldivians and international athletes to push their limits across water- and land-based sports. This initiative underscores the Maldives’ vision of becoming a hub for sports tourism, while also inspiring locals to discover new opportunities for innovation, creativity, and national pride.
To mark the launch, celebrated Maldivian free diver Ismail Nasheed (Issey) will attempt a national record in Static Apnea. His performance embodies the essence of the Book of Records, symbolizing how the Maldives can become a stage for bold, world-class achievements. The attempt will be broadcast live on Television Maldives (TVM), ensuring the entire nation shares in the moment. Safety and professionalism will be at the forefront, with medical and diving experts on standby, ensuring the event sets the tone for international standards.
Record-makers will be recognized through official certificates and commemorative coins, while extensive local and international media coverage is expected to boost global visibility. The BOR will continue to expand beyond the launch event, welcoming future attempts and establishing a living archive of remarkable stories connected to the Maldives.
According to Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and Managing Director of VMC, the initiative is about “breaking barriers, not just records.” He emphasized that the Maldives aims to inspire athletes worldwide to see the islands as more than a beautiful retreat but also as a destination where extraordinary milestones are achieved. By aligning tourism with sports and adventure, the BOR enhances experiential travel opportunities, making the Maldives a destination where travelers can witness, or even participate in, history being made.
Every entry in the Book of Records will contribute to the Maldives’ wider tourism promotion strategy, amplifying its image as a country of not just scenic beauty but also human achievement. For travelers, it opens the door to unique experiences that combine leisure with participation in or witnessing record-breaking moments.
The introduction of the Visit Maldives Book of Records cements the nation’s commitment to diversifying its tourism offerings and creating compelling new narratives that attract global audiences. With initiatives like this, the Maldives reinforces its role as both a haven of natural wonder and a stage for extraordinary accomplishments.
