In an inspiring initiative aimed at cultivating financial literacy and ethical awareness among Maldivian youth, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), through its Tamweel Islamic Finance Initiative, has officially launched the FutureFinance Essay Competition. This national-level competition is open to secondary school students across the Maldives and seeks to empower the younger generation to envision a more equitable and sustainable financial future rooted in Islamic finance principles and ethical decision-making.
The competition targets students in Grades 8 through 12, with entries grouped into two distinct categories: junior (Grades 8–10) and senior (Grades 11–12). Participants are required to submit original essays in English, strictly between 700 to 1,200 words, free from AI-generated content and unpublished elsewhere. All essays must be submitted in PDF format via email to [email protected] by 23:59 on 9 October 2025. Submissions must also include a properly formatted cover page bearing the student’s personal details and a copy of their National ID. Physical submissions will not be accepted.
Students are invited to explore one of ten forward-looking themes that delve into the future of responsible finance. Topics range from sustainability and social inclusion to technology’s role in transforming economies, such as “Finance for the Future: My Vision of a Fair and Sustainable Economy” and “From Cash to Code: Technology and the Future of Responsible Finance.” These themes are designed to encourage young minds to think deeply about challenges like inequality, climate change, digital transformation, and the social impact of financial systems.
To further incentivize participation, the competition offers generous cash prizes. The top essay in each category will receive MVR 3,000, followed by MVR 2,000 for the first runner-up, and MVR 1,000 for the second runner-up. In addition, special recognition awards of MVR 500 will be granted in each category. Select essays may also be published through national media or utilized in MMA’s financial literacy campaigns, providing students with a unique platform to have their voices heard at a national level.
According to MMA, this initiative is part of a broader institutional commitment to nurture values-driven financial decision-making in the Maldives. By encouraging young people to critically examine and contribute to discussions on ethics, inclusion, and sustainability in finance, MMA hopes to inspire a new generation of thinkers who can navigate and reshape the economic realities of tomorrow.
