Travel to the Maldives has just become easier for visitors from Azerbaijan and the wider Central Asian region thanks to a new interline partnership between Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, and Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL). The agreement allows travellers flying with Azerbaijan Airlines to Velana International Airport (MLE) to connect seamlessly onward to 17 island destinations through Maldivian’s extensive domestic network, the largest in the country.

This collaboration is designed to provide smoother travel experiences and greater convenience for holidaymakers who seek the Maldives’ world-renowned natural beauty. For travellers in Azerbaijan and neighbouring regions, the partnership opens up a direct gateway to some of the world’s most pristine beaches and luxurious resorts. With streamlined connections, it significantly reduces travel complexity for international visitors eager to discover the Maldives’ island charm.

Leaders from both airlines highlighted the shared goals behind the arrangement. Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Maldivian, underscored that linking international routes with the domestic network strengthens inbound connectivity and enriches the visitor experience. “By connecting their international services with our domestic operations, we are making it convenient for travellers from Azerbaijan and nearby regions to explore the Maldives,” he explained.

From Azerbaijan’s side, Jamil Manizade, Chief Commercial Officer of Azerbaijan Airlines, emphasised that the partnership expands AZAL’s international presence and unlocks new opportunities for its passengers. “For our passengers in Azerbaijan and neighbouring regions, this collaboration opens new travel opportunities and brings one of the world’s most desirable leisure destinations closer and more accessible,” he said.

Maldivian currently operates 26 aircraft across 17 domestic airports, in addition to international routes to destinations including India and China. Azerbaijan Airlines, based at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, holds a Skytrax 4-Star rating and has been recognised as the Best Regional Airline in Central Asia and the CIS.

For the Maldives tourism sector, this development represents an important step in deepening ties with Azerbaijan, offering new pathways for travellers seeking tropical escapes. With the Maldives continuing to be a dream destination for luxury, honeymoon, diving, and cultural tourism, the partnership is expected to attract more visitors from Azerbaijan and Central Asia who can now enjoy effortless access to island resorts, vibrant marine life, and authentic Maldivian hospitality.
