President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to building a sustainable, people-centred and innovative future for the Maldives’ tourism industry, a sector that continues to stand as the nation’s economic backbone and a global model of hospitality.
In his message marking World Tourism Day, President Muizzu described the growth of the industry as a remarkable journey driven by the vision and determination of its pioneers. He noted that the Maldives’ position as one of the most desired travel destinations in the world reflects not only the natural beauty of its islands but also the unmatched service and dedication of those working in the sector.
The President drew special attention to this year’s World Tourism Day theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” underlining how closely it aligns with national priorities. He emphasised that the Maldives is focused on progress that ensures tourism remains a force for positive change, creating opportunities while preserving the environment and cultural heritage for future generations.
Highlighting ongoing transformation, Dr Muizzu pointed to diversification as a key strategy. He explained that the tourism industry is now expanding beyond traditionally developed atolls, bringing economic activity to new regions and introducing niche segments such as halal tourism to meet diverse global demand. These efforts, he said, are integral to shaping a more inclusive and resilient sector.
Supporting these developments are major infrastructure investments, most notably the new international terminal at Velana International Airport. The President noted that the expansion of VIA is central to the Maldives’ long-term development vision, enabling smoother travel experiences for millions of international visitors and strengthening the country’s connectivity with the world.
In his address, President Muizzu expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone working tirelessly in tourism, from resort staff and travel agents to policymakers and service providers, stating that their dedication and excellence are what truly define the Maldivian guest experience. He stressed that the continued success of the sector rests on the hard work, creativity and commitment of these individuals.
Concluding his remarks, the President renewed his pledge to steer the industry towards a future where sustainability, innovation and people remain at the core. On his official X account, he also extended greetings on the occasion of World Tourism Day, reiterating his vision for progress that goes hand in hand with sustainability.
For visitors, this commitment signals even greater experiences in the Maldives, whether through exploring newly opened atolls, enjoying the expanding range of tourism products, or simply arriving at a more efficient and world-class airport gateway. With strong leadership and the collective dedication of the tourism community, the Maldives continues to shape its story as a destination where natural beauty meets human excellence.
