With the recent inauguration of the Koveli Business Lounge at Velana International Airport (VIA), the Maldives has taken a major step forward in refining the travel experience for premium passengers, solidifying the airport’s growing reputation as a world-class entry point to one of the most sought-after travel destinations on the planet.
At the official opening ceremony of the new lounge, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, emphasized the critical role VIA plays in supporting the Maldivian economy and hospitality sector. He described the development of VIA as one of the government’s foremost projects, an infrastructure deeply intertwined with tourism, the nation’s economic engine. Highlighting the vital frontline role played by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) staff, the Minister acknowledged their exceptional efforts in welcoming and serving travelers from across the globe. “The airport is not just an entry point; it reflects the spirit of Maldivian hospitality. The contribution of every employee here echoes a national service,” the Minister said.

The newly opened Koveli Lounge offers a refined and exclusive experience tailored to meet the expectations of high-end travelers. With a capacity to accommodate up to 270 passengers at a time, the lounge includes separate areas for business professionals and families, ensuring a quiet, spacious, and versatile environment. Children’s areas and comfort-enhancing amenities were thoughtfully integrated into the space to cater to the diverse needs of luxury passengers. According to MACL’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, the availability of such premium facilities is a major requirement for attracting large international airlines, enhancing VIA’s service profile and competitiveness.
The lounge was delivered in a remarkably short time span through the collaborative efforts of MACL, the government, and other stakeholders. Its addition to the airport’s growing portfolio of premium facilities reflects the Maldives’ continued investment in enhancing the quality and sophistication of its international gateway infrastructure.
Earlier this year, a major portion of the VIA expansion was inaugurated in conjunction with the Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations, showcasing the government’s commitment to positioning the airport as a seamless and comfortable transit hub for global visitors. Efforts are now underway to finalize the remaining components of the airport development project in time for the upcoming peak tourist season.
As the number of international arrivals continues to grow, such enhancements at VIA demonstrate the Maldives’ broader vision of delivering a seamless, luxurious, and hospitable travel experience that begins the moment a visitor steps off the aircraft. With the new Koveli Business Lounge and continued airport development, VIA is well on its way to becoming one of the premier airport facilities in the Indian Ocean region, supporting not only the nation’s tourism economy but also reinforcing its brand as a destination of comfort, elegance, and exceptional service.
