A new insurance initiative has been introduced to safeguard the Maldives’ vital tourism industry against future health crises. Trust Edge Risk Solutions, in partnership with Munich Re, Enquiris Raghnall Insurance Broking & Risk Management, and Solarelle Insurance, officially launched the Pandemic and Epidemic Risk Solution during a ceremony held at JEN Maldives, Malé by Shangri-La.
The programme, established with an aggregate policy limit of USD 5 million, will come into effect on 15 September 2025. It has been specially designed for members of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), offering them exclusive protection and preparedness against risks arising from pandemics and epidemics.
The launch event was attended by senior representatives of all partner organisations alongside distinguished members of MATI, underlining the strong collaborative effort to enhance the resilience of the Maldives’ tourism sector. Their participation reflected a shared commitment to ensuring that the industry remains protected against unforeseen challenges while securing the long-term stability of the nation’s economy.
With the Maldives welcoming over 1.8 million visitors annually in recent years, tourism remains the cornerstone of the country’s economy, contributing more than 28% to GDP and supporting tens of thousands of jobs across resorts, guesthouses, and service providers. The pandemic of 2020 demonstrated the vulnerability of global travel-dependent economies, with Maldives’ tourism sector experiencing unprecedented disruption. The introduction of this dedicated risk management programme provides a proactive solution to mitigate potential revenue losses and increased operational costs should similar events occur in the future.
The initiative also underscores the vital role of MATI, which has for decades served as the central body representing the tourism industry. By providing its members with access to this innovative coverage, MATI continues to reinforce its mission of strengthening industry standards and securing the interests of resorts and tourism stakeholders across the Maldives.
Representatives from the partner organisations encouraged all resorts and MATI members to obtain adequate coverage under the scheme, emphasizing that early adoption will ensure better preparedness and financial security. The programme has been structured to meet international standards of risk management while remaining tailored to the specific needs of the Maldives’ hospitality sector.
This milestone initiative not only strengthens the ability of local businesses to manage future uncertainties but also reaffirms the Maldives’ reputation as a safe, reliable, and forward-thinking destination for global travellers. By implementing such measures, the Maldives demonstrates its ongoing dedication to sustaining a world-class tourism industry that continues to attract millions of visitors to its pristine islands each year.
