Expanding its role as a vital link in global logistics, the Maldives has steadily advanced its sea-to-air cargo transshipment services, successfully delivering goods to 18 countries in August 2025 alone. According to the latest data released by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), this logistics initiative is fast transforming the island nation into a competitive hub connecting maritime and air cargo networks across continents.
The sea-to-air cargo service, an integrated effort between Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), has seen robust operational growth since its launch in May 2025. In just the month of August, a total of 291 tonnes of cargo, equivalent to 77 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), were successfully transferred from sea to air. This streamlined movement not only illustrates operational efficiency but also highlights the Maldives’ potential to serve as a crucial transshipment corridor between East and West.
Nine prominent international airlines have partnered in facilitating these cargo flights, offering extended global reach. These carriers include Virgin Atlantic, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Azerbaijan Airlines, Saudi Airlines, Swiss Airlines, and ITA Airways. Through their networks, cargo has been dispatched from the Maldives to a diverse range of markets such as Italy, United States, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Canada, Greece, the United Kingdom, Palestine, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Kosovo, Turkey, Austria, Czech Republic, and Ireland.
This service is particularly vital for rerouting time-sensitive, high-value goods, such as medical supplies, perishables, and tech components that arrive via maritime freight from South Asia and require accelerated delivery timelines. By merging the cost-efficiency of sea freight with the speed of air transit, this dual-mode transport system provides a strategic logistical advantage for exporters and freight operators alike.
With increasing volumes and expanding international connections, the Maldives is strengthening its credentials in the global logistics map not only as a world-renowned tourism destination but also as a functional logistics and cargo transshipment hub.
