At a group signing ceremony held at the Wangfujing Hilton Hotel in Beijing, the Maldives and China formalised eleven Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements, opening a new chapter in their long-standing partnership. The agreements, signed in the presence of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Chinese officials, are designed to strengthen collaboration across critical sectors, including capacity building, economic development, infrastructure, and renewable energy.
Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, His Excellency Kong Xinhua, described the ceremony as a “new beginning” in bilateral relations. In a message shared on social media, he highlighted that the MoUs reflect the shared commitment of both countries to sustainable development and mutual prosperity. Ambassador Kong expressed his pleasure at witnessing the signing alongside President Muizzu’s delegation, adding that the agreements serve as a platform to “join hands in cooperation and work together toward a brighter future.”
The importance of the agreements was further reinforced by Maldives’ Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, who welcomed the outcome as a vital step forward in promoting sustainable progress. He described the MoUs as an opportunity to forge impactful partnerships that align with the Maldives’ development goals and long-term vision of inclusive growth.
President Dr Muizzu, currently on an official visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, has engaged in a series of high-level meetings designed to enhance the Maldives’ international profile and strengthen its diplomatic and economic ties with global partners.
The newly signed agreements carry wide-ranging implications for the Maldives. Capacity building efforts are expected to deliver skills development and institutional strengthening, while economic and trade-related initiatives open pathways for greater investment and commercial activity.
