President Dr Mohamed Muizzu witnessed the signing of eleven cooperation projects between the Maldives and China during a formal ceremony held at the Wangfujing Hilton Hotel in Beijing. The event marked a significant step in advancing the bilateral partnership, highlighting both nations’ shared commitment to deeper collaboration across multiple sectors.

The Memoranda of Understanding and Agreements signed at the ceremony cover a broad spectrum of areas, including capacity building, economic development, infrastructure, and renewable energy. These initiatives are designed to expand cooperation in sectors critical to sustainable growth, reflecting the mutual priority of driving innovation and prosperity through strategic partnerships.

By focusing on capacity building, the agreements aim to create opportunities for skills development and institutional strengthening in the Maldives, while economic cooperation will open new avenues for trade, investment, and business engagement. Infrastructure projects and renewable energy initiatives will further support national development objectives, contributing to a future that is both modernised and environmentally sustainable.

President Muizzu emphasised that these agreements underscore the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and China, built on trust, goodwill, and shared aspirations. He noted that the new projects reflect the depth of bilateral cooperation and demonstrate a collective vision for sustainable progress.

The President is currently undertaking an official visit to China at the invitation of His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. His visit has included a series of high-level meetings and engagements designed to advance the Maldives’ diplomatic and economic interests on the global stage.

For the Maldives, the signing of these agreements not only represents an expansion of development opportunities but also strengthens its position internationally as a trusted partner. The focus on renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure aligns with the Maldives’ long-term vision of environmental resilience, while enhanced economic cooperation creates prospects for new investment flows, including within the tourism industry.

This renewed phase of cooperation with China is expected to deliver tangible benefits for the Maldivian people while reinforcing the nation’s reputation as a forward-looking, globally connected island state committed to progress and partnership.
