President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on the international community, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), to unite in support of justice, dignity, and peace for the people of Palestine. He made the appeal while addressing the “SCO Plus” Meeting held on Monday in Tianjin, China, where leaders and representatives from SCO member states, partner countries, and international organisations gathered to deliberate on shared global challenges.

In his remarks, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ longstanding commitment to international peace and diplomacy, noting that this year marks six decades since the Maldives achieved independence and joined the United Nations. “The Maldives remains as steadfast in its commitment to peace, dialogue, and diplomacy as it was in 1965,” he said.

The President expressed deep concern over the plight of the Palestinian people, reiterating the Maldives’ unwavering support for their legitimate right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent, sovereign State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He strongly condemned Israel’s occupation policies and inhumane actions against Palestinians, describing them as blatant violations of international law and grave infringements of human rights.

Beyond addressing the Palestinian issue, President Muizzu also used the platform to highlight the Maldives’ broader development agenda and its place in the global community. He recalled his government’s announcement of a bold aspiration for the Maldives to achieve developed country status by 2040, an ambition centred on ensuring high-quality public services, creating dignified jobs, and securing an environmentally sustainable and digitally enabled future.

The President underscored the transformative “Maldives 2.0” digitalisation initiative, which seeks to modernise governance, position the nation as a digital-first economy, and drive innovation across key sectors. He stressed that every country, regardless of size or geography, must have a voice in shaping global decisions, reaffirming the Maldives’ stance that inclusivity in international governance is essential for sustainable global progress.

President Muizzu’s participation at the SCO Summit, held at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, placed the Maldives at the centre of key global discussions on peace, security, economic integration, and governance. By linking national priorities such as digitalisation and climate action with global calls for justice, his statement reflected the Maldives’ commitment to being an active contributor to international cooperation.
