President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with His Excellency Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, at the Crowne Plaza Tianjin Meijiangnan on Monday, during the course of his official engagements in China.
The meeting began with both leaders acknowledging the longstanding cooperation and mutual respect that has defined the relationship between the Maldives and Azerbaijan. President Muizzu conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to President Aliyev for the warm hospitality extended to him during his participation in the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), an event hosted under Azerbaijan’s leadership. He noted that such gestures of goodwill demonstrate the strength of bilateral friendship and the commitment to sustained partnership.
Discussions focused on identifying new avenues for closer collaboration, with both Presidents agreeing that enhancing people-to-people ties, expanding economic cooperation, and fostering growth in trade and investment were priority areas for future engagement. President Muizzu and President Aliyev highlighted the potential for increasing exchanges in tourism, education, and cultural fields, recognising that greater connectivity between their peoples would reinforce long-term relations.
On the economic front, the leaders explored prospects for diversifying trade and investment cooperation. President Muizzu emphasised that the Maldives is keen to develop stronger business partnerships that support national development goals, while President Aliyev expressed Azerbaijan’s readiness to engage more closely with the Maldives in sectors of mutual benefit.
The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing Maldives–Azerbaijan relations across these strategic areas. They underscored their determination to strengthen cooperation not only bilaterally but also within multilateral platforms, working together on global issues that require collective solutions.
