President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held bilateral discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31 August in Tianjin, China, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. The meeting formed part of President Muizzu’s series of high-level engagements during his official visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.

The leaders exchanged views on strengthening cooperation between the Maldives and India, reflecting on the depth of their historic partnership. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the Maldives, highlighting the value of developmental cooperation that has long benefited both nations. He emphasised that under President Muizzu’s leadership, the Maldives has placed special importance on advancing relations with India, building on decades of friendship and mutual trust.

The discussions touched upon key areas of collaboration, including infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and security cooperation. These areas remain central to bilateral engagement and are seen as critical in driving sustainable development and stability in the Maldives. Both leaders acknowledged the importance of maintaining close coordination to ensure progress across these shared priorities.

The meeting in Tianjin follows Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Malé, where he attended the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence, at the special invitation of President Muizzu. That visit, and the latest engagement in China, further underscore the enduring strength of the Maldives–India relationship and the commitment of both governments to deepen cooperation.

In a message shared on X following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi noted that India’s partnership with the Maldives continues to yield tangible results and stressed the importance of carrying forward this collaboration into the future.

President Muizzu’s official engagements at the SCO Summit, including this discussion with Prime Minister Modi, highlight the Maldives’ growing diplomatic visibility on the international stage. Strengthened ties with India not only support national development but also create opportunities to enhance the Maldives’ appeal as a global tourism destination, reinforcing its reputation as a hub of hospitality, connectivity, and regional cooperation.
