President Dr Mohamed Muizzu arrived in Beijing on 30th August 2025, Saturday for an official visit to the People’s Republic of China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. His arrival underscores the Maldives’ growing presence on the international stage and its active participation in high-level diplomatic engagements.

At Beijing Capital International Airport, the President was received with full honours. He was greeted by His Excellency Wang Xiangxi, China’s Minister of Emergency Management; His Excellency Dr Fazeel Najeeb, Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to China; and His Excellency Kong Xianhua, China’s Ambassador to the Maldives. The reception featured an Honour Guard ceremony and a traditional cultural performance, reflecting the value placed on the Maldives–China relationship and the importance of this visit.
During his stay, President Dr Muizzu is scheduled to meet with President Xi Jinping as well as other world leaders. He will also participate in high-level discussions at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. As part of the programme, the President will deliver a statement at the SCO Plus meeting, where he will highlight the need for stronger multilateral cooperation in tackling pressing global challenges such as climate change, economic fragmentation, and rising geopolitical tensions.
The SCO, established in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, has evolved into the largest regional organisation in the world by geographic scope and population. It currently counts ten member states, with several nations participating as observers or dialogue partners. The Maldives joined as a dialogue partner in 2023, a status that allows it to engage in cooperative initiatives across sectors including trade, technology, health, and tourism.

President Muizzu’s participation reaffirms the Maldives’ commitment to global partnerships and sustainable development. His warm reception in Beijing not only reflects the strength of Maldives–China ties but also enhances the country’s visibility on the world stage. For international audiences, this presence is an important signal of the Maldives’ active role in shaping discussions on climate resilience and economic cooperation, issues that directly connect with the nation’s reputation as a leading sustainable tourism destination.
