In celebration of World Sustainability Day on October 29, 2025, The Nautilus Maldives, a premier ultra-luxury bohemian retreat nestled in the heart of Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, unveiled a series of hands-on monthly sustainability workshops that creatively engage families in environmental awareness and mindful living.

This new initiative is the latest chapter in The Nautilus’s partnership with ecoBirdy, an award-winning, family-owned design brand recognized globally for its pioneering work in circular design. The brand has earned acclaim for transforming discarded plastic toys into stylish, functional furniture and educational tools that promote recycling and conscious consumption. The collaboration between The Nautilus and ecoBirdy began earlier this year and is now deepening with immersive experiences that inspire young guests and their families to rethink waste and rediscover value through creativity.

Hands-On Learning Through Storytelling and Sustainability

Curated under The Nautilus’s “Young Wonderers” program, each workshop begins with ecoBirdy’s storytelling narrative “Journey to a New Life,” based on extensive field research. Through this imaginative tale, children learn about the life cycle of plastic from its initial use as toys, to its unfortunate fate as marine debris, and finally, to its transformation through upcycling. This narrative not only informs but emotionally connects young minds to the consequences of plastic waste and the possibilities of renewal.

The program seamlessly transitions from story to action. Children join their families in a gentle beach clean-up around the pristine shores of The Nautilus, collecting plastic fragments in a collective act of environmental stewardship. These collected materials then become part of a unique upcycling activity back at the Young Wonderers hub.

Innovative Recycling in the Maldives

The Nautilus proudly introduces the first recycling injection machine of its kind in the Maldives, enabling children to participate in the full transformation process of plastic waste. Using this technology, they shred and remold collected plastic into the shape of a beautifully swirled nautilus shell—designed exclusively by ecoBirdy for the resort.

This shell becomes the centerpiece of The Nautilus Pendant, a keepsake finished with rope sourced from local Banyan trees. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the pendant is a symbol of environmental care, creativity, and transformation—a tangible reminder of the impact even small actions can have on the planet.

A Commitment to Conscious Luxury

The Nautilus Maldives has long been celebrated not only for its unparalleled luxury, characterized by private beach and overwater residences, tailored service, and timeless design but also for its dedication to sustainability. Located in a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve, the resort actively integrates eco-conscious practices into its daily operations. This includes marine conservation initiatives, eco-friendly infrastructure, and partnerships with innovators like ecoBirdy who align with its vision of purposeful luxury.

By integrating sustainability into the guest experience in an educational and emotionally resonant way, The Nautilus offers a unique opportunity for families to create meaningful memories while contributing to a greater cause. The workshops serve as a platform for nurturing future environmental stewards and exemplify how luxury tourism can harmonize indulgence with impact.
