A promising initiative is bringing new opportunities to Maldivian fishermen, as more than two dozen individuals have already received financing through a dedicated partnership between Bank of Maldives (BML) and the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. By the end of July 2025, a total of 25 registered fishermen successfully secured loans under this progressive scheme, aimed at strengthening financial inclusion and improving the quality of life for local fishing communities.
This initiative stems from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 28 April between BML and the Ministry, focusing on simplifying access to financial services for Maldivian fishermen. Applications officially opened on 1 May, and within just three months, the impact is already visible across islands and fishing communities.
Through this collaboration, fishermen listed in the National Fishermen’s Register are now eligible for a broad range of financial products, including personal financing, credit cards, and housing-related loans tailored to meet the income profiles of individuals working in the traditional fishing sector. Importantly, the financing model recognizes the unique nature of fishing income, introducing seasonally adjusted repayment schedules, a first-of-its-kind model in the Maldives.
Under the scheme, registered fishermen can obtain up to MVR 300,000 (approximately USD 19,455) in personal financing without the need for collateral or equity, making this facility highly accessible. In addition to personal loans, eligible applicants can also apply for Home Build Financing, Home Purchase Financing, and Home Construction Financing, providing a path to long-term housing stability.
Bank of Maldives plays a pivotal role in this transformative effort. As the leading financial institution in the country, BML has actively contributed to nationwide economic development through inclusive banking services. This fishermen-focused financing program adds to the bank’s extensive portfolio of community-oriented initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to uplifting grassroots livelihoods.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has emphasized that this program is part of the current administration’s broader efforts to empower fishing communities, improve socio-economic wellbeing, and facilitate sustainable development across the archipelago. The National Fishermen’s Register, established under this administration, plays a central role in this strategy by helping formalize the fishing workforce and linking them with essential government and financial services.
As one of the pillars of Maldivian heritage and economy, the fishing industry continues to be vital to local island life. Through strategic partnerships like this, financial institutions and government agencies are working hand-in-hand to provide real solutions that enhance the resilience and prosperity of fishing families across the Maldives, all while opening new pathways to socio-economic progress.
