On the pristine shores of Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, a rare and enchanting natural event is captivating guests the arrival of sea turtle hatchlings. This season, four active nests are under careful monitoring, with marine experts predicting the next hatching to align with the upcoming full moon. The phenomenon offers visitors a remarkable opportunity to witness one of the ocean’s most magical life cycles unfold against the backdrop of the Maldives’ crystal-clear waters.
Earlier this month, the resort celebrated the successful hatching of 61 baby sea turtles, marking the start of their life journey into the open ocean. The remaining three nests belong to the Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas), one of the largest marine turtle species inhabiting tropical and subtropical seas. Recognized for their smooth, heart-shaped shells and plant-based diet of seagrass and algae, Green Sea Turtles play a vital ecological role in maintaining healthy coral reefs and seagrass beds, which are essential to marine biodiversity. While a potential Hawksbill turtle nest is also present, its confirmation is pending.
Sea turtle reproduction is a finely balanced natural process. Adult females, often after migrating thousands of kilometers from their feeding grounds, return to the very beaches where they hatched decades earlier. Under the cover of night, they dig nests in the sand and deposit their eggs before carefully covering them. Incubation typically lasts 45 to 70 days, after which hatchlings instinctively make their way to the sea, guided by the reflection of moonlight on the water. These extraordinary creatures can live for 60 to 80 years, reach lengths of up to 1.5 meters, and weigh as much as 300 kilograms. When resting, they can hold their breath for up to five hours, a remarkable adaptation to life in the ocean.
Fernanda Cortina Escalante, Alila Kothaifaru Maldives’ resident Marine Biologist, highlights the significance of this event:
“Sea turtles are fascinating creatures. They lead mostly solitary lives and can migrate thousands of kilometers between feeding and nesting grounds. It’s truly special to witness this part of their life cycle so up close on our island.”
For Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, this is more than a visual spectacle; it’s a vital conservation initiative. The resort’s in-house marine biology team and dive center, led by Euro-Divers Manager Camille Berger, work tirelessly to protect the nesting sites.
“Hosting these nests gives us the opportunity to educate guests on sea turtle conservation and inspire greater awareness for marine biodiversity,” says Berger. “We’re fortunate to share this experience with visitors from all over the world.”
General Manager Thomas Weber reflects on the privilege of such moments:
“Moments like these remind us of the beauty and responsibility we have in preserving this incredible ecosystem. It’s an honour to be part of the journey of these magnificent creatures.”
The resort’s approach to luxury tourism is deeply intertwined with environmental stewardship. By safeguarding the island’s fragile habitats and engaging guests in marine conservation programs, Alila Kothaifaru Maldives offers an experience that blends relaxation with a meaningful connection to nature. Visitors staying during hatching season may witness hatchlings emerging from their sandy nests, an unforgettable encounter with the raw beauty of the natural world.
With its idyllic location in the Raa Atoll, surrounded by turquoise lagoons and vibrant coral reefs, Alila Kothaifaru Maldives is not only a sanctuary for travelers seeking tranquility, but also a safe haven for marine life. As this new generation of sea turtles begins its journey into the vast Indian Ocean, the resort invites guests to share in the celebration of life, conservation, and the delicate balance of our planet’s ecosystems.
