In a reaffirmation of over five decades of diplomatic and development cooperation, President of the Republic of Maldives, H.E. Dr Mohamed Muizzu, welcomed Her Excellency Ikuina Akiko, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister and Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, at the President’s Office on Saturday afternoon.
The meeting marked a key moment in the ongoing partnership between the two island nations, as both sides reiterated their commitment to deepening bilateral relations. President Dr Muizzu conveyed his sincere appreciation to the Japanese delegation for their official visit and presence at the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations. He noted Japan’s long-standing friendship and generous support, highlighting the country’s consistent contribution to the Maldives’ economic and social development since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1967.
Special Envoy Ikuina Akiko, in turn, expressed her profound honour in attending the commemorative events and conveyed warm regards from the Prime Minister of Japan. She underscored Japan’s respect for the Maldives’ continued progress and reaffirmed Tokyo’s strong commitment to building on the existing partnership through cooperation in key sectors.
Discussions during the courtesy call covered an extensive range of areas where Maldives and Japan continue to collaborate. These include economic development, infrastructure, disaster resilience and management, telecommunications, and human resource capacity-building. The President and the Special Envoy emphasized the importance of enhancing these collaborative efforts, particularly in areas aligned with the Maldives’ national development priorities and Japan’s longstanding international cooperation goals in the Indo-Pacific region.
President Dr Muizzu also emphasized the value of people-to-people exchanges, acknowledging how the cultural and academic ties between the two nations have fostered goodwill and mutual respect for over five decades. He expressed optimism that this foundation would pave the way for deeper partnerships in tourism, climate resilience, and digital infrastructure.
The Japanese Special Envoy echoed this sentiment, pledging Japan’s continued support in strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new opportunities for collaboration, including in areas that contribute to sustainable growth and resilience of small island developing states like the Maldives.
