In a continuation of long-standing diplomatic engagement between two key Indian Ocean neighbours, President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, and Prime Minister of the Republic of India, His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi, held official talks in Malé on Friday afternoon, affirming a shared commitment to strengthen bilateral cooperation across priority sectors.
The meeting, held at the President’s Office in Malé, was a central feature of Prime Minister Modi’s two-day state visit to the Maldives, which began earlier the same day at the official invitation of President Dr Muizzu. The visit, the Indian leader’s first to the Maldives since beginning his third consecutive term in office, comes at a time of growing regional collaboration and mutual focus on sustainable development, security, and economic resilience.
The two heads of government opened the engagement with a private one-on-one discussion before convening formal bilateral talks attended by key officials from both sides. According to an official statement from the President’s Office, the discussions reflected a forward-looking agenda, placing emphasis on deepening cooperation in economic development, trade and investments, defence, and climate change mitigation, areas of shared strategic interest in the Indian Ocean region.
President Dr Muizzu, in his remarks during the talks, extended his appreciation for India’s consistent support towards the Maldives’ development journey. India has played a central role in the country’s socio-economic infrastructure over the years, providing assistance in areas ranging from housing, transportation, and healthcare to renewable energy and disaster resilience.
As discussions progressed, both leaders reaffirmed their intention to expand the scope of bilateral collaboration into new areas, notably capacity building, tourism development, sports cooperation, and healthcare partnerships. These sectors are viewed as high-impact areas capable of generating long-term economic and human capital benefits for both nations.
Tourism, in particular, remains a vital pillar of bilateral engagement. India has consistently ranked among the top source markets for inbound travel to the Maldives, and initiatives supporting greater connectivity and investment in tourism infrastructure were noted as mutually beneficial priorities.
In a ceremonial gesture marking the importance of the visit, Prime Minister Modi also signed the official guest book at the President’s Office, underscoring the formal diplomatic nature of the engagement.
This high-level interaction follows a ceremonial welcome accorded to Prime Minister Modi earlier in the day, which included a guard of honour and cultural performances, reflecting the Maldives’ commitment to diplomatic protocol and regional friendship.
The two-day visit also coincides with two national milestones—the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence and six decades of formal diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives. These historical markers offer added context to the renewed commitments made during the talks, which signal continuity, respect, and a shared vision for the future.
As the Maldives positions itself as a regional leader in tourism, blue economy, and climate advocacy, India’s partnership remains an integral part of the nation’s strategic external relations.
