His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held a high-level meeting with the Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, during his official visit to London. The meeting underscored the Maldives’ strong and evolving relationship with the Commonwealth, particularly in advancing shared priorities such as democratic governance, sustainable development, and economic cooperation.
President Dr Muizzu outlined the Maldives’ strategic vision to attain developed country status by 2040, a national goal that aligns with the country’s broader efforts to promote economic diversification, enhance institutional capacity, and expand international partnerships. He emphasised the Maldives’ leadership among Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in advocating for climate resilience, sustainable fisheries, and ocean governance on multilateral platforms.
The President reiterated the importance of continued collaboration with the Commonwealth to support national development goals. He acknowledged the Commonwealth’s contributions in areas such as electoral reform, legal framework development, and capacity-building across government institutions.
Secretary-General Botchwey reaffirmed the Commonwealth’s commitment to supporting the Maldives in these efforts. She expressed appreciation for the Maldives’ active role within the Commonwealth, especially its advocacy on issues critical to small island nations, including climate change adaptation and sustainable ocean-based economies.
The meeting also focused on expanding cooperation in trade and investment. With the Maldives increasingly positioning itself as a destination for sustainable tourism and innovative blue economy ventures, both parties recognised the role of the Commonwealth in helping member states build stronger commercial linkages and attract responsible investments.
Tourism and fisheries, two key pillars of the Maldivian economy were highlighted as areas of shared interest. President Dr Muizzu expressed appreciation for the Commonwealth’s support in promoting sustainable practices and urged continued collaboration in strengthening value chains and market access for Maldivian fish products and tourism services.
Both sides also discussed the importance of upholding democracy, transparency, and good governance, values at the core of the Commonwealth Charter. The President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to these principles as the Maldives continues to enhance its democratic institutions and foster an inclusive, rule-based system.
The meeting served to reinforce the Maldives’ diplomatic engagement with the Commonwealth and highlighted the country’s proactive role in regional and international affairs.
