A remarkable upswing in international tourist arrivals underscores the Maldives’ enduring reputation as a preferred global destination in 2025. According to the Maldives Tourism Update (Issue 23, 17 July 2025) published by the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 1,202,262 visitors had arrived in the country as of 16th July 2025, marking a 9.6% increase over the same period in 2024. This growth reinforces the nation’s strong post-pandemic recovery and sustained promotional efforts in key source markets.

In July 2025 alone, the average number of tourists per day stood at 5,883, highlighting the steady flow of arrivals during the mid-year season. The Maldives’ robust tourism infrastructure, complemented by its unique one-island-one-resort model, pristine beaches, and vibrant marine biodiversity, continues to drive strong demand among global travelers seeking exclusive and rejuvenating experiences.

Distribution of Tourist Accommodation and Preferences

As per the latest statistics, the Maldives currently offers 65,697 beds across 1,238 operational tourism establishments, including resorts, guesthouses, hotels, and tourist vessels. A notable 98.1% of the available beds were in operation by mid-July 2025, showcasing a high level of industry activation.

Among the 1.2 million visitors:

  • 72.8% (875,326 tourists) chose resorts, reaffirming their preference for luxury, privacy, and high-end services;

  • 22.2% (267,378 tourists) stayed at guesthouses, which are predominantly located on inhabited islands and offer more budget-friendly options;

  • 2.7% (32,812 tourists) stayed at hotels;

  • 2.2% (25,879 tourists) were accommodated on tourist vessels, reflecting niche segments such as diving cruises and liveaboards.

This distribution reflects the Maldives’ commitment to catering to a diverse range of market segments, from ultra-luxury travelers to budget-conscious explorers.

Top 10 Source Markets

China retained its position as the leading source market, accounting for 13.7% of the total arrivals with 165,134 visitors. This was followed by:

  • Russia at 11.7% (140,298 tourists),

  • United Kingdom at 9.6% (115,133 tourists),

  • Italy at 7.5% (89,951 tourists),

  • Germany at 7.2% (86,927 tourists),

  • India, USA, France, Switzerland, and South Korea rounded out the top 10, contributing to a balanced influx from both Asia and Europe.

The steady arrival numbers from traditional and emerging markets underscore the effectiveness of Maldives’ international outreach campaigns and its reputation for safety, natural beauty, and quality service.

Strengthening Air Connectivity

Enhanced air accessibility continues to be a cornerstone of the Maldives’ tourism success. As of July 2025, 45 international airlines connect the Maldives to major global hubs, including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, British Airways, and Air India. Regional carriers such as Maldivian and Fits Aviation, along with new entries and charter services, ensure convenient and flexible travel options for visitors across continents.

The upward trajectory in tourist arrivals aligns with the Maldives’ national strategy to expand its tourism portfolio, enhance service quality, and ensure environmental sustainability. By offering diverse accommodation choices, expanding regional air links, and tapping into new travel trends, the country continues to strengthen its status as a world-class destination for leisure, culture, and marine tourism.
