His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu departed for the United Kingdom this evening, leading a senior government delegation on an official visit aimed at deepening diplomatic and economic ties with one of the Maldives’ longest-standing international partners.

The President’s itinerary in the UK includes a series of high-level meetings and engagements focused on strengthening cooperation between the Maldives and the United Kingdom in a wide range of sectors. Key topics on the agenda include enhancing collaboration in governance, climate adaptation and environmental protection, education, trade, and foreign direct investment. These discussions are expected to open new avenues for mutually beneficial partnerships that align with the Maldives’ national priorities and development goals.
In addition to official bilateral meetings, President Dr Muizzu will also take part in a dedicated business forum in London, where he is expected to engage with prominent investors, business leaders, and policymakers. The forum serves as an opportunity to showcase the Maldives’ investment potential, particularly in sustainable tourism, renewable energy, infrastructure development, and the blue economy. The government has emphasized its commitment to creating a favourable investment climate backed by transparent policies and investor-friendly regulations.
This visit comes at a historic moment as the Maldives and the United Kingdom mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, a partnership that began on July 26, 1965. Over the decades, the two countries have nurtured a relationship rooted in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a commitment to sustainable development. The UK has been a key partner in areas such as education, climate change mitigation, and capacity building, while also being one of the largest source markets for Maldivian tourism.
As one of the top five inbound tourism markets to the Maldives, the UK plays an instrumental role in supporting the country’s tourism-driven economy. In 2024, British tourist arrivals continued to show strong performance, contributing significantly to the Maldives’ overall visitor numbers and maintaining the destination’s appeal among European travellers.
President Dr Muizzu’s engagements in the UK are expected to reinforce this long-standing relationship while laying the foundation for expanded cooperation in new strategic areas. The visit reflects the Maldives’ broader foreign policy direction under President Muizzu’s administration, which emphasizes proactive international engagement to strengthen partnerships that support national development and prosperity.
The official visit is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the Maldives’ global diplomatic footprint while creating tangible opportunities for collaboration that benefit the Maldivian people.
