New Route from Shenzhen via Bangkok Reinforces Maldivian’s Commitment to Chinese Market

In a continued effort to reinforce its position in one of the Maldives’ most important tourism source markets, Maldivian, the national airline has launched a seasonal direct flight service from Shenzhen, China, to Malé, via Bangkok. The new route strengthens the growing air connectivity between the Maldives and China, offering more travel options during the peak summer season for Chinese tourists.

The inaugural flight, which arrived at Velana International Airport on the morning of 9 July 2025, carried 146 passengers and recorded a load factor exceeding 95 percent, underscoring the strong demand for travel between southern China and the Maldives. Passengers were warmly welcomed on arrival, reflecting the country’s signature hospitality and its strategic focus on the Chinese market.

The new weekly Shenzhen service will operate through 21 August 2025 and adds to Maldivian’s expanding network in China. The airline had earlier introduced direct flights to Chengdu, Beijing, and Shanghai starting in January 2025, further cementing China’s role as a leading tourism partner for the Maldives. These routes are served by Maldivian’s Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft, while the Shenzhen route is operated using an Airbus A320, ensuring a high standard of comfort and reliability.

The seasonal connection from Shenzhen offers travellers in China’s southern region more convenient access to the Maldives’ luxury resorts, pristine beaches, and unique island experiences. The strategic addition reflects Maldivian’s ongoing commitment to diversify its market reach and accommodate the increasing number of Chinese leisure travellers seeking premium holiday destinations.

Tourism data from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment reveal that over 150,000 Chinese tourists have arrived in the Maldives in the first half of 2025, making China the top contributor to visitor arrivals this year. The surge in numbers coincides with a broader national push to elevate air transport infrastructure and increase flight accessibility from high-volume markets.

Maldivian’s growing capacity has been supported by the acquisition of a wide-body aircraft earlier this year, a key development that has enabled the carrier to initiate and sustain long-haul international operations. This procurement fulfilled a major policy pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who has emphasized the importance of aviation expansion in driving tourism growth. A second wide-body aircraft is also expected to be inducted into the fleet later in 2025, enabling Maldivian to scale up its international offerings further.

Beyond expanding its route map, Maldivian has been actively building its commercial presence in China. The airline recently signed a partnership agreement with TravelSky Global Distribution System (GDS), a major player in Chinese air travel technology. This collaboration will allow travel agents and partners across China to access Maldivian’s services more efficiently, thereby increasing market penetration and simplifying the booking process for international travellers.

Maldivian’s CEO and leadership continue to reaffirm the airline’s commitment to providing authentic Maldivian hospitality, competitive service standards, and seamless travel experiences for visitors arriving from China and other global markets. As air access improves and strategic investments in aviation continue, the Maldives is expected to sustain robust growth in tourist arrivals, further solidifying its position as a premier destination in the global travel landscape.

With enhanced routes, strengthened commercial partnerships, and fleet upgrades underway, Maldivian is playing an increasingly central role in shaping the future of tourism in the Maldives,  connecting the island nation more efficiently to the world while supporting the national vision for sustainable economic growth through tourism.
