The Maldives’ Under-21 Women’s Netball Team has proudly earned the 7th place in the Asian Youth Netball Championship 2025, concluding their campaign with a spirited performance in Jeonju, South Korea. Despite a final match defeat to Pakistan (35-60), the team leaves the tournament with a track record that reflects remarkable growth and resilience, making this a proud milestone in the history of Maldivian youth sports.
Grouped in Group B, alongside teams ranked 6th to 11th in Asia, the Maldives competed against a competitive lineup throughout the tournament. Their final standing, 7th in Asia, came after a tightly contested series, where they faced off against Pakistan twice, narrowly losing both encounters. The final loss placed Maldives just one rank behind Pakistan, which now holds the 6th position in Asia.
The team’s performance, however, extends far beyond the final match outcome. Out of the six matches played before the final, the Maldives secured victories in five, showcasing impressive consistency and team synergy. The tournament began with a decisive win over Chinese Taipei (51-26), followed by a strong victory against Japan (59-32). The young athletes continued their winning streak with a dominant performance against Saudi Arabia (73-20). Their only group stage setback came against Pakistan in the league rounds, where they fought hard before conceding the match with a score of 39-49.
Rebounding with determination, the team returned to face Chinese Taipei in the semifinals of the Plate competition and emerged victorious once again, securing a 51-39 win to qualify for the final match of Group B. Although they eventually placed second in Group B and seventh overall in the continent, the Maldives’ campaign stood as a testament to the team’s dedication and competitive edge.
This year’s Under-21 team featured a largely new roster, with all but five players making their international debut. Their success in overcoming this challenge reflects both the depth of emerging talent in Maldivian sports and the effectiveness of grassroots development programs supported by national institutions.
Upon their return to Malé, the team was welcomed with pride and respect by Minister of Sports Abdulla Rafiu, Commissioner of Sports Mohamed Tholal, and other senior officials. Their acknowledgment signals the nation’s growing recognition of youth sports as a driver for international representation and national unity.
Group A of the Asian Youth Netball Championship features the top five netball teams in the region, India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong, teams with more established netball legacies. In this context, Maldives’ performance in Group B reflects the country’s potential to rise further in future competitions.
