In a step towards extending its global reach, Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives operated by Island Aviation Services Limited, is inviting expressions of interest from potential partners in South Africa to serve as General Sales Agents (GSA) for its recently launched Airbus A330-200 wide-body operations. The airline is seeking qualified agents to support its expansion into the South African market, as it builds on the momentum of its growing long-haul network.

Parties interested in the GSA appointment are required to submit an expression of interest along with the completed EOI Form via email by midnight on 4 July 2025. This move underscores Maldivian’s strategic efforts to build reliable international sales networks as the airline grows its presence on intercontinental routes.

Earlier this year, Maldivian marked a major advancement in its international operations by commencing wide-body flights to China using its newly acquired Airbus A330-200. The airline currently operates scheduled services to three major Chinese cities, Chengdu, Beijing, and Shanghai, reflecting both market demand and strengthened bilateral ties between the Maldives and China. These services represent a shift in Maldivian’s operational capacity from a largely regional carrier to an airline with intercontinental capabilities.

The acquisition of the A330-200 is part of the current Maldivian administration’s broader commitment to modernize and expand national aviation infrastructure. In line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s electoral pledge, the government aims to equip Maldivian with two wide-body aircraft to enable long-haul connectivity. The first aircraft, already in service, is being used for flights to China, while plans are underway to bring in a second wide-body aircraft later this year. The additional aircraft will support Maldivian’s upcoming launch of services to European destinations, expected by October 2025.

This expansion strategy forms part of the Maldivian government’s broader vision to transform the country’s aviation and tourism sectors. By improving direct air access to distant markets, the administration seeks to diversify tourist arrivals and strengthen economic resilience. Enhanced air connectivity is expected to bolster Maldives’ position as a competitive long-haul destination, offering seamless travel to one of the world’s most exclusive tropical getaways.

Maldivian, which currently serves over 30 domestic and international destinations, is leveraging its new wide-body capabilities to reach untapped markets and establish the Maldives as a more accessible destination for long-haul travelers. The planned route expansion to South Africa reflects a targeted effort to explore non-traditional tourism source markets, while simultaneously creating new economic and diplomatic linkages.

As the Maldives continues to position itself as a premier destination for global travelers, Maldivian’s expansion initiatives reflect the country’s strategic focus on sustainable tourism development, enhanced infrastructure, and international engagement.
