A strategic collaboration between Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) and global travel leader Booking.com is bringing new marketing power and knowledge to guesthouse operators across the Maldives. Through an exclusive workshop held recently at the STELCO Auditorium in Malé, this initiative introduced local guesthouse owners and managers to advanced digital marketing tools and strategic insights aimed at boosting visibility and increasing global bookings.

This workshop marked the first major activity under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between MMPRC and Booking.com. It was designed to provide practical guidance tailored to the Maldives’ growing guesthouse sector, a vital component of the tourism industry that continues to expand rapidly across the archipelago. With over 800 registered guesthouses spread throughout the islands, these locally owned accommodations play a crucial role in connecting travelers with authentic Maldivian experiences beyond the luxury resort model.

Throughout the interactive sessions, participants received hands-on instruction from Booking.com experts on how to enhance their digital presence. Topics included listing optimization, understanding user engagement metrics, leveraging guest reviews, and using data-driven tools to refine pricing and promotional strategies. The focus was not only on increasing bookings but also on improving the overall guest experience through better digital engagement.

Attendees also benefited from tailored discussions on current global travel trends and emerging consumer behavior patterns, helping them align their services with international expectations. Emphasis was placed on using digital marketing to highlight the unique features of each property, whether island-specific experiences, community-based activities, or sustainable tourism effort, allowing guesthouses to stand out on Booking.com’s highly competitive platform.

The session served as an essential platform for capacity building among small and medium accommodation providers, many of whom operate in remote islands. By equipping them with practical knowledge and accessible tools, MMPRC and Booking.com are directly contributing to the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the Maldives’ guesthouse tourism segment.

MMPRC reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive tourism development, stating that initiatives like this workshop are key to strengthening partnerships between the public and private sectors. “We will continue to support local stakeholders through collaborative efforts that help drive industry growth, increase visibility for local operators, and ensure the Maldives remains one of the world’s most desired travel destinations,” a representative from Visit Maldives stated.

This initiative underscores the government’s broader efforts to decentralize tourism benefits, support local entrepreneurship, and provide equal opportunities for small-scale tourism ventures. As guesthouse travel continues to attract a new wave of budget-conscious and experience-driven tourists, partnerships such as this are essential in keeping the Maldives competitive on the global stage.
