In a major step toward enhancing the Maldives’ global tourism appeal, the soon-to-be-inaugurated new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) is expected to significantly contribute to the nation’s strategic tourism objectives. According to Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC / Visit Maldives), the state-of-the-art terminal will not only increase the country’s visitor handling capacity but also elevate the Maldives’ position in the international travel market.

Mr. Shiuree shared these insights during a special video presentation series hosted by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), where he highlighted the terminal’s direct link to the Maldives’ ambition to sustain and surpass its previous tourism milestones. “The new terminal will open up many avenues for the economy and tourism,” he said, pointing out that such infrastructure developments are key to supporting record-breaking figures like the 2 million tourist arrivals achieved in 2023. He emphasized that the facility will offer globally competitive services and amenities, delivering a seamless and high-quality experience for international travelers.

The new international terminal is scheduled to be officially inaugurated on July 26, 2025, in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence. The inauguration ceremony will be officiated by H.E. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Mr. Shiuree acknowledged the President’s active role in pushing the project forward, stating that the President has personally issued numerous directives to ensure the timely completion of the terminal. His leadership and close involvement reflect the administration’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure that underpins the national tourism industry.

Spanning over 78,000 square meters, the new terminal will drastically improve the country’s airport operations. It is designed to accommodate over 7.5 million passengers annually, more than double the current capacity. Features include modern check-in facilities, upgraded immigration and customs services, expanded commercial spaces, and exclusive lounges tailored for luxury travelers. These improvements aim to position Velana International Airport on par with leading global aviation hubs.

CEO & MD Mr. Shiuree also took the opportunity to express sincere appreciation for the efforts of MACL’s management and staff, crediting their professionalism and dedication as crucial in the terminal’s completion. “MACL’s commitment has been instrumental in ensuring the delivery of this important national project. Their tireless efforts will be recognized for years to come,” he said, on behalf of MMPRC.

Velana International Airport continues to serve as the Maldives’ primary gateway for international arrivals, with nearly 98% of tourists entering the country via air travel. Enhancing this entry point is vital not only for maintaining service standards but also for sustaining tourism-driven economic growth. In 2023 alone, tourism accounted for nearly 28% of the Maldives’ GDP and over 60% of foreign exchange earnings.

MMPRC, as the national body mandated with tourism marketing and promotion, remains committed to working closely with MACL and other key industry stakeholders to ensure that the traveler experience, beginning from arrival at VIA, is in line with the Maldives’ reputation as a world-class tourist destination.

With the upcoming launch of this new terminal, the Maldives is set to meet growing international demand while reinforcing its status as a premium destination offering unmatched hospitality, pristine natural beauty, and seamless connectivity.
