In a gesture of strengthening diplomatic and interparliamentary ties, a delegation from the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, comprising members of the Türkiye–Maldives Interparliamentary Friendship Group, paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the President’s Office on Sunday morning. The meeting marks a continued commitment to deepening the historic relationship between the two brotherly nations.

During the discussions, President Dr Muizzu expressed his sincere appreciation for the visit and welcomed the delegation’s engagement with government institutions in the Maldives. He commended the group’s multi-party representation, noting that it reflects the democratic and dynamic nature of Türkiye’s political framework. The President reiterated the Maldives’ unwavering support for Türkiye in the international sphere, particularly lauding Türkiye’s principled stance on the Palestinian cause—a position that aligns closely with the Maldives’ own foreign policy and humanitarian values.
The President also emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation, especially in the fields of trade, tourism, and people-to-people connectivity. He highlighted the growing opportunities in the Maldives for foreign investment, especially under the current economic reform agenda, and encouraged collaboration in sectors that could mutually benefit both nations. Climate action was another key point of discussion, with Dr Muizzu outlining the Maldives’ efforts in adaptation, environmental resilience, and transition to renewable energy sources. These efforts reflect the island nation’s broader strategy to build a sustainable economy while addressing existential threats posed by climate change.

The Turkish delegation responded positively to the President’s remarks, expressing strong interest in expanding partnerships across a range of sectors. Areas of potential collaboration discussed included higher education, tourism development, agricultural cooperation, and trade. The delegation noted that Türkiye sees the Maldives as a valuable partner in the Indian Ocean region, both economically and culturally. They emphasized the importance of finalizing trade agreements and streamlining economic collaboration to improve bilateral commerce and mutual prosperity.
Members of the delegation expressed pride in cooperating with what they described as a “brotherly Muslim nation” and praised the Maldives for its stability and leadership in the Islamic world. They reiterated their commitment to promoting shared values such as religious unity, economic development, and regional cooperation. The delegation also acknowledged the Maldives’ strategic importance in the Indian Ocean and recognized its global voice on environmental and humanitarian issues.
The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to further elevate the relationship between the Maldives and Türkiye, underscoring decades of friendship based on trust, cultural affinity, and shared aspirations. Both parties reaffirmed their intention to strengthen institutional ties and foster stronger parliamentary diplomacy as a means of ensuring continued cooperation in the years ahead.
This visit underscores the growing depth of Türkiye–Maldives relations, which have expanded in recent years across diplomacy, education, infrastructure, and tourism. As tourism remains a cornerstone of the Maldivian economy, increased cooperation with Türkiye could bring promising developments in visitor flows, knowledge exchange, and sustainable tourism ventures.
