With preparations in full swing, Velana International Airport (VIA) is counting down to the highly anticipated opening of its state-of-the-art new passenger terminal, scheduled for 26 July 2025, a date that also marks the Maldives’ Independence Day. The milestone is expected to elevate the Maldives’ global standing as a premier travel destination and significantly enhance the visitor experience for millions of international tourists arriving each year.

The official countdown to the terminal’s opening was launched by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) CEO Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed on 20th June 2025. Speaking at the ceremony, Shareef acknowledged the remarkable commitment of MACL’s workforce and emphasized the importance of viewing the terminal’s inauguration as a national responsibility.
“I have no doubt about the courage and confidence of the MACL employees. The staff of MACL have shown me that in the short time I have been here,” Shareef stated, urging all employees to set an example for the nation by ensuring the successful and seamless launch of the new facility.
The development of the new terminal is part of a wider airport expansion project aimed at addressing long-standing capacity challenges. The current terminal at VIA was originally designed to handle 1.5 million passengers annually. However, with the Maldives welcoming over 2 million tourists in 2024 alone, the airport has been operating far beyond its intended capacity. This has created pressing demands for a more efficient and expansive infrastructure to accommodate the country’s thriving tourism industry.
Spanning 78,000 square meters, the new terminal is designed to accommodate over 7 million passengers per year, more than quadrupling the current capacity. This substantial expansion will not only ease congestion but also provide a world-class travel experience supported by modern amenities and streamlined operations.

In preparation for the terminal’s opening, MACL has intensified its Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) efforts. These include familiarization tours for airline partners, designed to introduce airline staff to the terminal’s layout, operational procedures, and passenger flow logistics. On-ground teams have also participated in detailed tabletop exercises simulating passenger arrival and departure processes, ensuring that every aspect of the transition is fine-tuned ahead of the official launch.
The new terminal will feature cutting-edge facilities, improved immigration and security processing zones, spacious check-in and boarding areas, enhanced baggage handling systems, and dedicated spaces for premium lounges and retail outlets. These enhancements are tailored to meet international standards and provide a seamless journey for travelers from arrival to departure.
As the gateway to one of the world’s most sought-after island destinations, VIA plays a pivotal role in supporting the Maldives’ tourism-driven economy. The terminal upgrade represents a major investment in the country’s future, ensuring it remains competitive in the global travel market while offering visitors a memorable and comfortable first impression.
With the opening of the new terminal just weeks away, travelers can look forward to a vastly improved airport experience that reflects the beauty, hospitality, and ambition of the Maldives, an island nation renowned for its pristine beaches, luxurious resorts, and world-class diving spots.
For tourists and industry partners alike, 26 July 2025 will mark not just a celebration of independence, but also a bold step forward in the Maldives’ ongoing journey to enhance its tourism infrastructure and service excellence.
