Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel is currently attending the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Istanbul, Türkiye. The high-level diplomatic gathering, taking place from June 21 to 23, 2025, brings together foreign ministers and senior delegates from the 57 member states of the OIC, which collectively represent more than 1.8 billion Muslims around the globe.
Upon his arrival in Istanbul, Minister Khaleel was warmly welcomed by Lieutenant General (Retired) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef, Ambassador of the Maldives to Türkiye. He extended his appreciation to the Turkish government for their gracious hospitality. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Minister confirmed his participation in the conference and emphasized his commitment to engaging in meaningful discussions with fellow foreign ministers from the Islamic world.
The 51st OIC CFM convenes under the theme “Enhancing Unity and Solidarity Through Dialogue for Sustainable Development”, and focuses on strengthening cooperation among member states on key issues such as political coordination, socio-economic development, humanitarian efforts, and the protection of Islamic cultural heritage. The agenda also includes discussions on Palestine, Islamophobia, the situation of Muslim minorities, and the broader geopolitical challenges faced by member countries.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, founded in 1969, stands as the second-largest intergovernmental organization after the United Nations. The OIC plays a pivotal role in fostering political, economic, scientific, and cultural collaboration among its members. The Maldives, which joined the OIC in 1976, has remained an active and committed member, advocating for greater solidarity, shared prosperity, and constructive engagement in regional and global affairs.
Minister Khaleel’s participation at the 51st session reflects the Maldives’ continuing dedication to multilateral diplomacy and its intent to strengthen ties with the wider Islamic community. Through active involvement in OIC platforms, the Maldives reiterates its call for collective efforts to address the evolving challenges confronting Muslim nations while promoting sustainable development and unity.
The Council of Foreign Ministers meetings serve as a critical decision-making platform within the OIC, guiding the organization’s policies and initiatives for the year ahead. This year’s session is expected to adopt several resolutions and action plans that will shape the course of cooperation among member states in 2025 and beyond.
