AA. Thoddoo is set to welcome over 130 seasoned table tennis athletes from more than 20 countries this August, as the island prepares to host the 1st Thoddoo Masters Table Tennis Tournament, the first international Masters-level event of its kind in the Maldives. Scheduled from 19 to 25 August 2025, the tournament is expected to be a major step forward in positioning the Maldives as a rising destination for sports tourism, especially among mature athletes aged 35 and above.
The tournament is being jointly organised by Thoddoo Local Authority Company Ltd. (TLAC) and the Ihaa Table Tennis Academy (ITTA). Athletes from countries including Germany, China, Spain, India, the UK, and the USA will participate in this prestigious event, highlighting the growing international recognition of the Maldives not just for its pristine beaches, but also for its emerging potential in the global sports scene.
The event has also gained strong corporate backing, with Dhiraagu, the Maldives’ leading digital services provider, signing on as the Digital Partner. This partnership reinforces Dhiraagu’s broader mission to support inclusive community development and enhance the Maldives’ profile as a multi-dimensional destination. In a statement, Mohamed Mirshan Hassan, Director of Brand and Marketing Communications at Dhiraagu, expressed the company’s enthusiasm in supporting the tournament. He noted that Dhiraagu’s involvement is aligned with its long-standing commitment to fostering sports, wellness, and digital innovation across Maldivian communities.
“Our role as Digital Partner in the Thoddoo Masters Table Tennis Tournament is part of our ongoing efforts to promote a digitally connected, active, and engaged society,” said Mirshan. “We believe that supporting international sporting events such as this not only benefits the athletes and spectators, but also contributes to the overall economic and social vitality of the host community.”
Ahmed Karam, President of the Thoddoo Council, welcomed the initiative as a catalyst for local growth. He underscored the importance of Dhiraagu’s involvement, stating that the company’s continued support plays a crucial role in promoting Thoddoo as a new hotspot for sports tourism and enhancing visibility for emerging destinations in the Maldives.
The tournament also represents the culmination of years of effort by local sports advocates. Ibrahim Latheef, Founder of the Ihaa Table Tennis Academy, emphasized the significance of the event, explaining that it stands as a testament to the dedication of those who have worked to develop table tennis in the Maldives. He noted that Dhiraagu’s technological support will be instrumental in delivering a smooth and professionally managed tournament that meets international standards.
Beyond the matches themselves, the event is expected to generate widespread benefits for the island community — including increased guesthouse bookings, local business activity, and global exposure for Thoddoo. The tournament aligns with the Maldives’ growing strategy to diversify its tourism portfolio by promoting niche experiences such as sports, wellness, and cultural events that appeal to both regional and international markets.
With a strong blend of local enthusiasm, international participation, and strategic digital support from Dhiraagu, the Thoddoo Masters Table Tennis Tournament 2025 is set to offer more than just world-class matches, it will serve as a vibrant platform for connecting communities, celebrating athletic talent, and showcasing the Maldives as a destination that goes beyond the ordinary.
