Velana International Airport (VIA), the primary gateway into the Maldives, is set to introduce advanced towbarless aircraft towing vehicles, marking a major step forward in ground handling operations. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which manages VIA, has confirmed that preparations are nearing completion for the deployment of TPX-200 MTX model vehicles, internationally recognized for their performance and reliability in major global airports such as Dubai International, Abu Dhabi International, and Singapore Changi.

The introduction of these industry-standard towbarless vehicles is projected to enhance ground handling and aircraft movement efficiency by up to 60 percent. This leap in operational capability not only accelerates aircraft turnaround times but also contributes to a smoother and more secure airport experience for both passengers and airline partners.

Unlike conventional towing systems that require a separate towbar for each aircraft type, the TPX-200 MTX towbarless system allows a single vehicle to handle various aircraft models, eliminating the need for time-consuming manual connection and disconnection of equipment. This streamlined process increases safety for ground personnel and reduces the likelihood of equipment-related incidents, which is especially critical in high-traffic environments like VIA.

MACL’s Head of Ramp Services, Mr. Ali Shareef, emphasized the organization’s commitment to continuously upgrading airport infrastructure and equipment to align with international standards. “We are working hard to secure the latest technology and vehicles to ensure maximum safety and operational excellence at VIA. The new towbarless trucks will significantly reduce aircraft loading and dispatch times while enhancing the overall security and reliability of our services,” he said.

MACL also revealed that eight operators have undergone specialized training in the handling of the new vehicles and are currently awaiting the final clearance pending a comprehensive risk assessment involving key aviation stakeholders.

The implementation of these vehicles aligns with VIA’s broader modernization efforts, reinforcing its position as a world-class airport serving one of the world’s most sought-after holiday destinations. By optimizing airport operations, the Maldives ensures that travelers experience smooth transitions from arrival to resort transfers, maintaining the high standard of service that defines the nation’s tourism experience.

As the Maldives continues to welcome millions of visitors annually, investments in state-of-the-art airport infrastructure are vital in supporting the country’s tourism-dependent economy. The enhancement in VIA’s ground handling efficiency is expected to benefit international carriers, improve scheduling precision, and enhance overall passenger satisfaction, further strengthening the Maldives’ image as a premier travel destination in the Indian Ocean.
