Travelers exploring the Maldives’ breathtaking islands will soon benefit from faster, more reliable, and comfortable domestic flights as the country’s national airline, Maldivian, progresses with its fleet modernization plan. The airline has announced its commitment to fully replace its Dash-8 fleet with next-generation ATR aircraft by 2027, a move set to significantly enhance the overall travel experience for both international and local passengers flying across the Maldives.
The announcement was made by Maldivian Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas during a recent ceremony held to welcome the airline’s fifth ATR aircraft, a 46-seat ATR 42-600 variant. This marks a key milestone in the airline’s transition strategy, which began in January 2023 with the gradual integration of ATRs into its operations.
Iyas emphasized that the decision to phase out the Dash-8 fleet was driven by rising maintenance costs and prolonged downtime associated with the aging aircraft. “We will continue this until all Dash-8 aircraft are replaced with ATRs. We are expecting to complete this process by 2027,” he stated.
The airline’s switch to ATRs, known for their superior fuel efficiency, quieter engines, and modern cabin design, has already yielded tangible improvements. According to Iyas, technical reliability and on-time performance have notably increased, while passengers are enjoying a more refined in-flight experience thanks to the new state-of-the-art cabins.
Maldivian currently operates a total fleet of 25 aircraft, including one wide-body Airbus A330, one narrow-body Airbus A320, four ATRs, nine Dash-8s, and 11 Dash-6 Twin Otter aircraft, which are vital for connecting travelers to the country’s outer atolls and resort islands.
The aircraft upgrade also aligns with the broader national goal to strengthen the Maldives’ aviation infrastructure and support President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to expand international air connectivity. As part of this agenda, the government is actively working to increase the number of wide-body aircraft in Maldivian’s fleet, enhancing long-haul capabilities and opening new routes for tourism.
