Efforts to boost visitor arrivals while increasing the length of stay and targeting luxury tourism segments are central to the Maldives’ current tourism strategy, according to Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim. As the island nation reaches the one-millionth tourist milestone faster than in any previous year, officials are intensifying efforts to position the Maldives as a premium destination that offers more than just short escapes.
Speaking in an interview with PSM News, Minister Thoriq emphasized the importance of not only counting visitor arrivals but also focusing on the quality and duration of each stay. “The average length of stay must be increased to maximize the benefits of tourism,” he said, noting that visitor spending and potential investment in tourism-related sectors are key areas that require further attention. “We are also prioritizing the attraction of high-end travellers who contribute more per visit and are more likely to engage with luxury experiences across the country.”
At the end of 2023, the average tourist stayed in the Maldives for approximately 7.7 days. As of this year, data from the Ministry of Tourism indicates an average daily arrival of 6,363 tourists, reflecting a consistent upward trend in interest. While these figures are encouraging, Minister Thoriq noted that converting short stays into extended visits will provide more substantial economic returns, especially for local communities and small businesses engaged in the tourism value chain.
The Minister highlighted that since the beginning of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, there has been renewed emphasis on marketing the Maldives as a world-class travel destination. High-level engagements at international events such as the ITB Berlin Travel Trade Show have played a crucial role in strengthening partnerships with global airlines and leading travel operators. These discussions, he said, are helping to facilitate better air connectivity and diversify the Maldives’ presence in international markets.
In addition to trade fairs, a series of targeted roadshows have been launched across key source markets to enhance destination visibility and promote new offerings. These outreach campaigns are tailored to appeal to niche markets, including wellness tourism, diving, gastronomy, and ultra-luxury experiences, which continue to gain traction among affluent global travellers.
The Ministry’s strategy also includes working closely with stakeholders in the hospitality industry to enhance services, develop sustainable tourism practices, and promote local culture and heritage. With increasing global interest in experiential and meaningful travel, the Maldives is positioning itself to deliver unique experiences that go beyond the traditional sun, sand, and sea narrative.
As the government moves forward with its tourism objectives, the target of attracting 2.3 million arrivals this year is coupled with a broader vision, to ensure that each visitor’s journey is longer, richer, and more impactful, both for the guests and the communities they visit.
