Minister of Tourism and Environment, Hon. Thoriq Ibrahim, has departed for France to participate in the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference, scheduled to take place from 9 to 13 June in the coastal city of Nice. This high-level global summit brings together heads of state, ministers, policy-makers, scientists, environmental advocates, and development experts to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the world’s oceans.

The focus of this year’s conference is centered on the urgent need to protect and sustainably utilize marine ecosystems, in line with the objectives outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14). SDG 14 calls for the conservation and responsible use of oceans, seas, and marine resources to support sustainable development. Topics under discussion include reducing marine pollution, improving the management of fisheries, addressing the effects of ocean acidification, and enhancing the resilience of coastal ecosystems.

The participation of Minister Thoriq highlights the Maldives’ deep-rooted commitment to ocean stewardship and sustainable tourism. As one of the world’s most renowned island destinations, the Maldives depends heavily on the health and vitality of its marine environment, not only for biodiversity but also for its tourism-driven economy. The Minister’s presence at the conference underscores the Maldives’ readiness to work in partnership with the global community to promote marine sustainability and ensure long-term environmental and economic resilience.

Joining Minister Thoriq in representing the Maldives is Hon. Ahmed Shiyam, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, who arrived earlier in France to take part in the sessions. A special side event initiated by the Maldives will be held during the conference, focusing on the sustainable development of small-scale fisheries. Organized by the Ministry of Fisheries, this session aims to create a platform for dialogue and knowledge-sharing between experts, policymakers, and industry stakeholders on effective models for planning, operating, and managing small-scale fisheries, particularly in island nations where livelihoods and food security are closely linked to marine resources.

This dedicated session will explore national and international strategies to elevate the role of small-scale fishers through structured policy frameworks, technical support, and inclusive governance systems. With expert proposals and case studies, the session will highlight innovative approaches that can contribute to the economic empowerment of local communities while ensuring the ecological health of marine ecosystems.

The Maldives’ active participation in the UN Ocean Conference not only reflects its global leadership on marine sustainability but also reinforces its position as a responsible tourism destination committed to protecting the very resources that make it unique. Tourists visiting the Maldives can take pride in supporting a nation that prioritizes environmental responsibility, marine conservation, and sustainable development key values that shape the Maldivian experience both above and below the surface.
